Raking Two-Day Hay

Today I’m raking two-day hay with the Farmall H and New Holland 258 rake. It’s thick hay and a little wetter than I would normally rake, but the forecast has changed and I need to get this hay day as fast as possible!

  1. Just like my bar rake! On my second pass I always flip the windrow over. If we don’t flip it over the hay underneath the windrow sticks to the ground and the baler won’t pick all of it up. Flipping it back over on the return pass rakes that layer of hay up and when the baler goes through it picks all of the hay up. Curious to know if you have that issue where you are located or not? The type of grass that we have here and the ground may dictate why we do that. I have a neighbor that has a wheel rake and his wheel rake does not turn the windrow over as he is raking. You can see where every window was after he finishes baling because there’s a thick strip of hay stuck to the ground that the baler was unable to pick up.

  2. Hi Pete, I just finished compeltely rebuilding my NH 256 rake. Replaced every single bearing and loose universal joints. Despite all that, there still seems to be lash in the gear box. Is that normal for these rakes?

  3. I just got a similar John Deere 640 side delivery (rollobar) rake from an auction. After getting a manual for it (I like to undo years of neglect and start fresh, knowing what a piece of machinery is made of and that it is torqued to specs) I saw you can instal a single or double acting remote cylinder in conjunction with the reel suspension rods to enable the driver to quickly elevate the tines while moving to avoid obstacles or windrows and once past, lower it to the setting the reel suspension rods are at. I have never seen one outside of the manual, let me know if you’d like to see the mock up picture in the manual.

  4. Always loved making hay. Cut thousands of acres with a 22 Massey Harris tractor and a Massey mower. Rode dump rakes and pulled wheel rakes. Built loose hays stacks and picked square bales. Enjoyed all of it.

  5. There is a million ways to do it! I guess to be fair there really is couple different mind sets though are you raking then baling or is the guy bailing working with you..

  6. Really gotta watch taking corners with a rake like that take to sharp of a corner the rake will catch the wheel and the machine will com over your head and kill ya gotta watch

  7. Hey (hay) Pete! Have you done a video on how to set up that rake for different raking jobs? I have an IH 35 which is like yours without the dolly wheels. I darn near completely rebuilt it, just needs paint to look new. Three adjustments, left and right height and angle the rake, but not sure which works to do what.

  8. Hey Pete, there's a way to get 0.086% greater efficiency but will cost you 11.3% of enjoyment. Just thought you should know. Bwahaha! [thanks for the great videos and marginal jokes 🙂 ]

  9. Nice work , love the drone shots but mostly I love the lines of hay waiting to be baled and the fact your using vintage machinery makes this video more exciting what a great sight to see in the field, great video thank you best wishes to you and your family

  10. I sure miss making hay! (though my wife will disagree, we where pretty poor in those days but I reckon we where richer in other ways. So glad we raised out kids on the land, just the last few years of school saw us living in town. it just wasn't the same. Loving your videos, brings back so many memories of a life I enjoyed (mind you, working 7 days a week got a little tiresome, but I also went on to do that in another business) Thanks for the sharing!

  11. I ponder how you know the hay is dry enough and won't mould when stored . Thankyou for teaching and giving us the knowledge to make it an easier decision to follow suit.

  12. I cant double up the outside windrow because the fields are surrounded by trees on most of my hay fields so the hay would rarely finish drying that way.The windrow would be too thick .The field edges dont get enough sun with the trees near by.Nice hearing The old H run.But maby a farmall H should be called old because it dont seem to age.Mine still can do what it did 75 years ago and still looks the same, still sounds the same. When I drive it I forget that its 75 years old.Actualy it makes me feel young because I drove it when I was 12 years old and I stiil drive it. People that come to visit me from the city that dont know any thing about tractors look at it and say it looks new,as if it was designed within the last couple years.I always thought that raking hay with a farmall H was far more tractor than was needed although we used ours for that at times. Our H tips the scales at just under 5500 lbs and the rake weights about 800 lbs.Our farmall A pulled the rake just fine for years.Keep the videos coming.I enjoy them allot !
