Should I Paint the 656 Tractor?

It’s almost time to start farm winter projects! I have many to choose from; should I paint the 656 tractor? Or should I work on getting one of the other tractors running? We have a little time to think about that. But meanwhile, we have a sick calf to treat, and our vets come to check him out. His head is still swollen and he can’t eat hay, so as well as giving him medication, we’re feeding him an alfalfa pellet tea. Then, we have to finish making hot sausage from the pig we butchered, and I show how to prepare and stuff sausage casings.

  1. Are you guys located in New York? Made me think that as soon as you mentioned Cornell vets came to your farm to check on your cow. Btw…. I've work with several Cornell DVM's over the years and they are the best.

  2. My $0.02 cents worth. Any job worth doing is worth doing right. And so I too go through everything when refurbishing anything. I make it look like new or even better. Just the way I do things. So if you go the paint route, do it right and do everything to make it look new… JMHO

  3. That md will run your 990 haybine on my small farm we have used a super m on haybine and I have seen people use a regular m on a haybine and your md has a bit more pep than a regular m

  4. I think the MD might be more a long term project……..but if you are asking the question….you already have the answer. Yes. You'll do it. Your just trying to figure out the order in which you'll start them. LMAO!!

  5. Yes, re-painting is much more work than most think, but full restoration like you do is many times more effort. I love restorations and have done many from an old Wheelhorse to a Farmall Cub to '40 Ford Pickup to several antique aircraft and others. Don't ever want you to lower your standards, but as I get older I found that things I "fix up" and "refresh" for my own daily use with paint and overhaul can be just as satisfying as full museum quality restorations and take much less time and money. As long as they look good (new paint) and are reliable (replace worn parts) they don't have to be "perfect" down to the last historical nut and bolt. Just a friendly thought from a fellow restoration guy.

  6. Just take care of the 1 that interests you the most.
Guess what? Since Amazon said your book was probably lost I clicked for a replacement then I got your book then about a week later I got your books replacement. I guess I got 2 for the price of 1.
I hope that didn't cost you anything. If I can find a farmer/homesteader I might give him the extra book for encouragement. Hope your calf heals ok.

  7. I vote for the MD. More interesting and rare, doesn't remove a working tractor from the line for an extended time, you need more time with the 656 loader to determine if any modifications are needed.

  8. I saw smoke when you started the 656 in another video but then it's a diesel. I'd check compression and other things to see how close it is to needing an overhaul and then go from there.

  9. i think it be a good choice it should extend the life of you 656 my uncle had done the same with his 966 but he had passed and it sat and i just bought it and when i can i would want to repaint it
