In an interview for the FRONTLINE documentary “Putin’s Road to War,” journalist Julia Ioffe discusses Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine — and why she believes the Russian leader is now “more dangerous than he’s ever been at any point in the last 22 years.”

“What he has opened up with this invasion is unthinkable,” Ioffe tells FRONTLINE. “And because he is losing and because the sanctions and the Ukrainians are humiliating him, because he is backed into a corner, he is the most dangerous he has ever been, because it is now existential for him.”

Julia Ioffe is an American journalist who was born in Russia. She is a writer for and founding partner of the media company Puck. She previously reported on politics and world affairs for The Atlantic.

This interview was conducted by FRONTLINE’s Mike Wiser on March 3, 2022. It has been edited for clarity and length.

  1. Nato moving eastward over 3 decades is inconsequential, surrounding Ru and putting missiles on its border. Ru security as a state is not necessary–to the west. Break Ru up and move in mineral deals, Black Rock, and plenty of investment for the west.

  2. wtf is this. you dont like other cultures or governments? Is this woman a mind-reader or what? If the west and its sick culture would have honored minsk or stayed out of Ukraine, Ukraine would have been another Belarus. Deranged Putin? is she a psychiatrist- no. NPR should go away Why the hate? what the point? what about palestine no news there!

  4. A clear example how damaging " Getting high on your own supply" is whatever it is that we want and gives us comfort Too much isolation or anything is actually so damaging.Get off your computer , put your biases aside and go interact and connect with peaple in person . We are only human.

  7. Very beautiful and intelligent woman that Russia could benefit from. As a Russian I genuinely hope this woman comes back to Russia and provides her intelligent in order to help us.

  8. The racists against Civil Rights, during the 50s-70s, spoke against the movement exactly as Ioffe speaks against Russia's valid moral claim against Ukraine's ethnic cleaning against Donbas Russians.

  9. Please remind yourself the facts that took place starting 2015: the closure of Russian Diplomatic centers in US /some 200 y.o/.
So, please remind Youself this HUGE SIGN OF A POSSIBILITY TO War.
We did not knew then…, BUT
    We Know Now.😢

  10. why focus on Putin exclusively? Why not speak about US imperialism and decades of american coups, invasions, regime change, election interference, etc? what about our support for oppressive dictators in places like saudi arabia, egypt, panama, iraq, etc? why do we never talk about the other side of this equation? what about how the military-industrial complex seeks out wars for profit in places like iraq and vietnam where we invaded based on complete lies? this is relevant because this is the opponent that other nations face, they make decisions based on what we do and what we have done around the world.

  11. Joe Rogan…trifecta..beautiful, brilliant, sweater hammers…just kidding..I would like to here an interview with her …what we could learn. Thank you.

  12. Imagine if idk say California……. Or NYC decided Independence would we really see that as a country? Add 30 years. Even then when we see those as a country no we would not. Let's swap it what if Florida declared Independence wanted to be communist would that be ok? But it's ok for a original part of USSR (Russia) to be independent and choose democracy? I'm not talking about what's right or wrong. I'm just trying to put us the USA in that situation and how would we feel about it?
