  1. Where is South Main Auto? Vermont I hope! Was just told my 2017 Outback front sub frame is rotted and won’t pass inspection. The Subaru dealer sold me a warrantee that he said covered every single thing that could could go wrong except tires and brakes. Today he tells me subframe not covered. Less than 50K miles on it but I live on an old rutted gravel road in Vt so this is apparently my fault and not covered. If I’m going to pay $1160 to replace it, I want this guy to do it.

  2. Hey Eric
    About that rusty subframe?
I seen the next show about the clearing up of some comments ?
You did a good job brother
Not many would tackle that and may say yea Subaru for making that a replacement part 🎉

  3. You do your cotter pins the same way I do mine except i bent the lower leg down flush with the side of the nut. I do that to keep anyone doing the ole reach around from cutting hands on sharp ends.

  4. So I watched it again eight months later; and I was equally impressed by your skills and dexterity. I am seriously thinking about selling my extensive investment in Subaru, but my wife wants to keep it. (2010 White Forester bought new, 64000 miles, no problems yet, and no payments). But that's not what's on my mind here. What I wanted to talk about was the fact that you don't wear eye protection when you spray substances, hammer stuff, weld, and impress us with your skills. One false move and you could wind up on the corner with a monkey, and organ grinder, and a cup of pencils. Get some safety glasses. We love you. John Adams, former President.

  5. I worked with my dad 50-60 years ago and he cut his cotter pins exactly as you do. Not seen anyone cut them that way before. Dad could tell if a customer wasn’t being honest with him if they said he had done the work just by the way the cotter pin was cut. I cut my cotter pins that way to this day. Great video. Thanks for the show!!

  6. I enjoyed the show. Thanks for sharing! More so because I am in the same situation as your customer there. How many hours did you put into the project? Mine is a 2011 with about 106k miles. New tranny, radiator, tires, and rotos/brakes. I was preparing for the long haul. Is the fix worth it? I was wanting to put a few extra coats of paint on the sub frame before it went up; and wire wheel and paint some of the old parts :). Nice work.

  7. The rotting of cars where you are is horrifying. I can't believe how much car is missing. I can see why the gas axe and the rattle gun are the first option. Closely followed by welding nuts and bolts to bearings to jack things apart.
I live in New Zealand, and I'm close to the ocean so I get some surface rust if not careful, but I didn't realise how lucky I am. If you can do it there , where the roads are salted, I for sure can do it here.
Thanks Mr O, I admire your perseverance, and appreciate your teaching.

  8. Just finished doing mine on my 2010 legacy gt, had a steering rack problem, electric not hydraulic, sub frame was in good order, but heavy to handle on my own, thank god that is finished
thanks for your video Eric,it helped

  9. I just finished a cradle change on a 2011 Subaru Legacy today 3/1 /23 not a job for the weak! Replacement of all the hardware , control arms and Power steering lines on the rack as well .Rust bucket Deluxe… Great videos Thanks Eric.

  10. Got behind with the run up to Christmas, finally got all three watched! Nice work, Mr. O!! I would say an 8-9 year old car going another 6 to 8 maybe for the money put in was well spent!! The new subframe with fluid film will outlast everything else on thar Subie! Hope you and yours had a Merry Christmas and have a great 23!! Thanks Eric!

  11. Lol ‘if you don’t want to watch this go back to the first video and play it in reverse.’ You sound like a Chilton/Haynes manual. 😅

  12. Hell of a lot of work for a ratty old Subaru. But it gets a new lease of life for a few more years perhaps. Hard to imagine that was very cost effective. The guy must love that car.

  13. Please wear hearing protection when hammering and using air impact tools. As an old mechanic, and not having worn hearing protection I now have severe tinnitus accompanied by hearing loss. It's definitely no fun. No, it's horrible.

  14. This was a great series! I'm up in Maine 🇺🇸 where rust is a serious problem as well. So to see a shop actually do something to help a fella out is amazing.

  15. Nice job. That is an incredible amount of work and a tough job. I replaced the ball joints on my rusty 12-year-old Subaru in November while lying on the cold driveway and I am still pulling pieces of rust out of my eyes;-) I would not undertake the job you just did. I have much respect for the amount of work performed.

  16. Enjoying your videos Eric! My name is Brian Zimmer, and my Grandfather founded and my cousins still run Zimmer Auto Parts in Arcade, NY. It’s one of the oldest NAPA stores in NY! My dad didn't follow in the family footsteps but it skipped to me! I love working on my own cars and do my own maintenance whenever I can! We are fortunate here in Colorado, that that much rust is not an issue unless your car is from the East or Midwest! Keep up the good work!
