  1. Went to drag strip back in early 70's and was laughing when I saw a vw lineup against a camaro. Tree came down and that bug had 5 car lengths by the time he hit 2nd gear I thought that camaro would play catch up but that bug held its own. Nothing touched it all day till it broke an axle. That bug beat mustangs, chevelles, torinos, road runners, everything. Most people still rowed through the gears back then. Automatics were consistent but boring to watch. I had a bug that I used while going through school and was tired of the lack of power. I went a little crazy building it and after blowing a transaxle and ripping 2 flywheels off cranks I took the race cam out that you could have a picnic ot top of the lobes they were that big and just put a performance street cam in. One of the other students in my class started talking shit about my bug and I said that piece of shit bug would blow the doors off your 455 1970 Grandprix. So at the end of school a bunch of classmates and I hit a deserted road and that grandprix and I lined up. I had gone through 2 flywheels and cranks and a transaxle so I didn't launch the car but took off pretty quick. I had 10 car lengths at the top of 1st gear. LOL, I granny shifted the rest of the way. When I got back to start line everyone was laughing. The dude said he got a bad start so we went again, same thing, he said one more time and a buddy of his said he had to take the ride. 3rd time Same thing again. Kid said he was catching me and his buddy who took the ride with me said yeah you were catching him cause he was granny shifting and gliding in 4th gear. I knew exactly how that guy at the drag strip felt beating all those iconic muscle cars. Of all the builds I've done and some have been pretty impressive. Building a vw IS the most gratifying of them all. Nothing wakes up like a bug build, it's like adding turbo and nitrous to any other build 😁 . This bug sounds nice and healthy, enjoy your ride 😉

  2. Bugs are cool little cars, the air cooled engine is awesome. One big and safety improvement is welding a roll cage into the platform frame, much safer at high speeds.. In reality the beetle body was only " safe" to about 80 mph… I revved my 1915 cc motor with counterbalanced crank and balanced engine to about 7000 rpm..

  3. If you want that engine to live a long and happy life, keep the redline conservative – say, 5000. Besides, it looks like you've got so much power and torque, you don't need to rev it high anyway.

  4. Damn! You pulled out right in front of that red pick-up! That would have ruined your whole day!
Great build and a lot of fun though! Thanks for sharing!

  5. Just wanted to thank you for making such enjoyable video's. Problem is now ya got me wanting a Bug. What year/engine size do you like for a daily driver. Wish I was closer you have all kinds the things I would buy. Great hangin with you in the garage. Cheers!!!

  6. I used to own 6 bugs back in the 80's. My 67 had a 2110cc/82mm stroke x 90.5mm bore/dual 48 webers with 3rd and 4th close ratio/4.37 ring and pinion. Loved that car but sadly it got stolen. I built the engine myself with help from a buddy who wanted to learn at the time. It was a really fast for that era.

  7. Mustie where are you guys ? I used to live in Dover and Portsmouth area for about 13 years, I'm not a native Yankee as I am from Louisiana and since moved back. Love your videos!

  8. Back in 2002 I got a nonrunning '67 Beetle really cheap, combined that with an old '92 Mazda rotary 13B twin turbo charged engine I saved from the crusher. Made 250 BHP, ran mid 10's in the quarter for less than $4,000 total in the entire deal. Weather it was on the track or on the street, nothing and I mean NOTHING is more priceless than the looks on the faces of Vette owners and other high end cars owners faces as you blow by them in an old ratted out VW Beetle lol. I sold that car 3 years later for $5,800 and regret it to this day.

  9. Looks like a fun machine to drive.
Quite like these short videos. Enjoy your videos, but would be nice to have a condensed version of the longer videos sometimes for those hectic weeks.

  10. i dont believe its 200 hp, maybe 120 which is pretty beastly in a VW… i knew a guy with a 200 hp bug and it would just annihilate the tires in all four gears…it was hilariously pointless but it did the most amazing burnouts and doughnuts…both tires just cooking despite the fact it was open diff
