In this video I go over the timeless question “Which Linux Distribution should I choose?” that haunts us Linux users. I’m going to try and demystify this so you can get to understanding Linux Distros. Everyone is very opinionated about this and what works for one person may not work for another. Instead of going over the literally 100s of distributions lets focus on the types to choose from and pick one from each.

Types of Linux
Debian and Ubuntu
Slackware and SUSE
RHEL, CentOS, and Fedora
Arch

  1. Ubuntu – useless crap. No one likes Ubuntu.
Fedora – UnstableOS, no one should use it.
Redhat – forget about those greedy bastards. Never should be used.
Archlinux – absolutely pointless. For sadomasochists.

  2. Thank you for the information. I am moving away from Win 10 and followed your recommendation to go with Mint. Mint is working on an older machine and I'm satisfied with it for the time being. I use it equally with my Win 10 machine. Your comments about going with a vanilla Ubuntu and changing the desktop to suit oneself is a good idea. It's that or Debian in the future for me, I think. I have nothing against Mint currently but your videos about Debian and Ubuntu have left me curious. I'm slowly learning about the command line, too.

  3. You recommended Ubuntu that is – BASED ON – Debian. Why not go directly to the – SOURCE – used for that distribution? Doesn't it make MORE SENSE?

  4. I left at 1:35 when he said "Dee"-bian… for those unaware, Debian was named by its creator, Ian Murdock, as a portmanteau of his and his girlfriend/future (ex-)wife Debra names… I don't believe she pronounced her name "DEE-brah". For a video recommending which Linux distro to choose, it's concerning that he mispronounces such a monumental distro that has been around since damn near the beginning, formulated I don't even know how many other distros (i.e. Ubuntu, Mint, MX Linux, Kali, which are probably mentioned later in this video as well), and still maintains its popularity for thirty years later.

  5. so the only thing that differs distro to distro is sometimes there package manager and sometimes additions to what they add up to distro upon which is it build? (fork) coz they all have the same kernal and you can change desktop environments, etc

  6. and… what is your recommended?…. if i need fireworks look like and office…. in my list zorin and linux mint already "optimized" image/video editor and libre office …

so ? zorin pro or linux mate/xfe ?

  7. One big thing i think new timers miss when it comes to Linux is that. sure there are a lot of distributions and a lot of many of them are under the hood very similar. while what people usually chose Linux after is the look and feel.I been there myself, never liked how Ubuntu's look and feel. I set my eyes on Arch Linux because that's what the steam deck bases it self of off. but what i didn't know the look and feel is something completely different as its based around the desktop environment. which is interchangeably with a click of a button as long as its installed. Im running a Manjaro version with KDE plasma I think that, changing distros aren't that great. i might base my version onto a pure Arch install in time as i do wish to have more fine adjusted control when it comes to my own hosted server. and on my own client computers.

  9. what the f**k is wrong with the linux world? is there any stable and acceptable distro? the only half way good one is linux mint 19.3 mate. but when i try to boot from a newer live medium it kills my login. i still can login from the command line but there is no more graphical login possible. and that happened 3 times already, one time after system update.
after that i tried debian mate and what showed up after installation was that nasty gnome2. i would love a completely new and crazy desktop environment, just not that one.
kubuntu is very unstable: it looses icons. my task bar is half empty. it forgets wifi passwords and i checked all settings.these are only 2 problems of many and i'm fed up with repairing my system on a daily base.
linux was a great and very stable operating system at the beginning in the late 90s when the kernel was compiled and not modular. it seems to have gone down the tubes.

  10. Wished I'd have seen this video years ago. I'm now on Arch after starting out with Mint. Been on my Arch daily driver and love it. No more windows for me.
