I picked up this engine along with 4 others and a 1968 bug from an estate sale 2 weeks ago.
I tried to get it running on the back of the truck but it did not want to go. so lets see what was wrong and if it will run now.

Can a bad distributor cause the rotation by hand to stop at the same spot?
â¤Thumbs Up!!
Another starting motor torture test hehehe 😂
4 yrs. Later going thru. Mustie. Withdrawal
I'd love to have that little blue bug

I've never had a VW. They are amazingly simple. I work on dirt bikes and they a similar in many ways.
You Will Need Higher Pressure Oil Pump To Handle The External Cooler
4:47 – wrench on screwdriver. Sweet.
This is the only video I seen on it but if you check the points
Sir i am looking for a
I got a Friend from High school I graduated with . she has a 1973 VW Beetle and still has it and it still runs she would Change the oil Religiously and the Car still looks brand new the motor still Factory new looking
Hi Mustie, big fan from the U.K, thanks for all your videos!
I have a question for you if you wouldn’t mind… when you set up your 34 PICT 3 carbs, what are your go-to bypass screw and volume control screws adjustments for just getting an engine going?
The majority of answers I have read seem to say 2 and 1/2 turns on each screw out to get started?
Cheers! Jim
Where do you find all these sexy old air cooled vw's ? I'd love to find one free as you commonly do ? I'm in the mid west rust belt .
Your sleeve is dangerously close the belt/pulley, scaring me to death!!!
Very cool video
Yay ! Nice job -“it’s alive !!!! “
VERIFICATI APRINDEREA PRIN STABILIREA AVANSULUI CORECT !! NU MAI ASA VA FI PERFECT SI PORNIREA USOARA@!!!!!
I I accidently had the CC on during the video and when the motor started it said [music]. Haha. Yes YouTube, it certainly is.
There's a new dance craze sweeping the nation !! At 13:16 called "The Mustie Shuffle !
Was waiting for that loose shirt sleeve to get caught in the belt…
16:57 HELL YEAH!!!!
Can you help me with some questions I have about my vw motor I'm new to vw
You might consider keeping a good carb and distributor around to use on these barn engines for testing. Maybe a fuel pump also.
This reminds me of working on a trike with my brother 25 years ago. We usta start the engine on the floor and trip out the lady's 🙂 … it got me to second base twice… lol , same girl tho.
Can't blow air backwards through the accelerator drilling–there are two check-balls in t here which prohibit back-flow of fuel.
Note that when Mustie was removing the carb top and gasket, we could see the Float Pin Retainer–that white horseshoe-shaped piece–installed backwards. This inhibits the movement of the float. It is a common error.
Perfect escape room for Mustie1. The door has a mechanical lock that can only be open by a rusty old VW engine. He has some of what he needs but the rest he must improvise.
Get that oil cooler off the fan intake.
4 cyl aircooled overheated? Lo vol of oil?Any way of telling how many hours it ran since 1957?oops just saw another comment re same question.
In Mexico you can found this engine with fuel injection in models from 1996 to 2003. In mexico VW produce that vehicule until 2003 with the special edition last one. My bro has one 1995 model.
Biggest problem besides supper heat is oil change it often very often
I love it. sounds good but dump some damn fuel in that carb you're giving me anxiety every time you crank it, lol
That's a LARGE bowl
Scabby Hagerty. A+ video.
Any VW that's been run with the oil cooler is dust. You never block that inlet it will run 20 degrees hotter.
If you are willing to sell it, I would buy the engine, or if anyone has an engine that would fit a 1968 Bug
Waiting for that sleeve to get caught in the pulley. Be careful!
Would you sell one of those VW motors
un reguerito de gasolina y pusssmmmmmmm
He don't believe in giving it a little gas while you're trying to crank it hell yeah let accelerator pump squirt a little bit in there just wind on it until the starter glows red I guess LOL
great vid you allways something from this man
Good old-fashioned German technology ! Great video
God by a 5 gallon bucket of carburetor wash what the hell is that
Like the vids. But an old vw will always run. Unless it's locked up in the jugs! Sometimes it may have the bearings locked. But not that often! These air cooled engines is nothing but a four cylinder Briggs engine. But you can take the time and build one of these and it will out run a motorcycle from red light to red light!!! Seen it many times!
do you add the lead additive in your air-cooled vw engines
what does tilting the engine do?
