For the past year, Kyah, her mother and her older sister have been living out of a single room in a relative’s house — experiencing what’s been called “hidden homelessness†in order to avoid entering the shelter system. The coronavirus pandemic has only amplified their struggles. Meet Kyah and her family in a scene from “Growing Up Poor in America” that explores the difficult-to-measure phenomenon of “hidden homelessness.”

Whoever would have thought that kaya would be homeless . . .
Why isnt the 18 year old working? Why isnt the 14 year old out babysitting or raking leaves?
Please God gets this family a safe place to live like you did when I were homeless. Amen. I will be praying for yoyr family. Amen. ðŸ™
Hopefully the 18 year old can join the military and find herself and a career. I’m saying that out of respect so she can get away and be someone and proud. 🥹
I'm just seeing this video. Its been 5 years. I'm hoping that all of you are doing better now. If you are, or aren't please let us viewers know. Help is available.
poor but with iphones, alot of candy
In the early 2000s right when I was growing up I was born in the '90s My mother was a single mother trying her hardest to raise her son who she adopted and she was forced to drive broken down cars that were falling apart $100 cars and the last car she had before he amazes me and my stepfather took the junk cars away from my mother was a car with a blown head gasket and gas pouring out of the fuel tank underneath you couldn't even put gas in it because it poor gasoline out of the car because the hole in the fuel tank we never had cable TV we only have VHS's and DVDs but is better than nothing and all the kids and surrounding area my friends are their parents are struggling just as hard as my mother it's sad how much is hidden behind what's really going on in the country The people with the good paying jobs that buy fancy cars don't see the suffering going on around them and don't even care to look and help those who are struggling they only care about themselves and not those who are struggling around for a country to work you need to care about everybody even the poor and then it things couldn't get worse My stepfather passed away and my mom got tricked out of the vehicle that he gave her someone conned her out of it and she got rid of it but long story short in 2014 in November someone called the fire chief on my mother and I and ended up making us be on the streets again but no money to even move her stuff out of the home no money to even find a place or get a hotel or anything we are forced to be on the streets again and when we were on the streets that time we were on it for November and taught October a 2015 when a landlord made a deal with us to do payments to get into a mobile home and then when my stepfather passed away in 2012 my mother and I had no help when we were living in a beautiful house when I moved to the projects after that house we moved to a project and it wasn't the best place but we had no one's help to help us move no money for the U-Haul truck or anything we had to do something very illegal we used a trailer with no license plate or anything on it that you tow behind with a car to move our stuff in the rain with everything get important on because we couldn't afford a truck that could cover and it was raining the time that we left and moved to the projects and then we moved out of the projects to a place yeah it might not had a work in furnace and the deck might have needed work but no one should have called the fire chief and made us lose that place that was a roof over our head especially at wintertime coming around knowing that we have pets so then when we were homeless during that time we stayed in the car we parked my mother's one car in a field at a friend of hers farm and then the other car we kept with everything of ours in the trunk and everything and stayed in hotels at the beginning of the month when our money came in but when it ran out we slept in empty homes hey the carpet was better than the hardwood floor but hey life is hard and when you have these rich people all act like homelessness is a problem something is wrong with people no not all people that are homeless have drug addictions not all people who are homeless are lazy not all people that are homeless need to get a job because you know why some of them are being discriminated disabled people are homeless too I'm legally blind I can't get a job I try I'm totally I'm a liability but I'm looking into another place where I'm thinking of moving to the United Kingdom and I already found eight jobs I can get but I can't get none in America it's sad now my family and I live in a mobile home I had a studio apartment I took my father and he moved in with me into that studio apartment then my mom and her fiance moved into that apartment with me and we got told by a landlord it was too many people for a studio apartment and a nice lady named Jodi showed my mom and I the mobile home because we were being evicted out of the studio apartment for too many people in it and we're still in poverty in going to lie The car that we have has a ride it out frame it won't pass inspection and it has other issues beside that electrical and stuff but God provides might not be right away but God does provide when New York State took my income away set of blind person couldn't manage money and they took everything I had away from me took my bank and everything and had someone in a state control of it all I had an advocate for 6 years to get that back That's how long it took and 2021 I got my freedom back and got my income New York State discriminated me $100 a month to live off of I have a butter bowl I had a soft jar and a couple spaghettio cans as cups that was my dishes that I had until a nice person seen what I had and gave me some dishes and then no heat no hot water my apartment had that I was in that the state of New York put me in they picked that apartment and I found electric fireplace that's almost throwing away it needed the cord fixed I fixed it and that's how I heat my apartment and then I talked a friend of mine into moving to the studio apartment next door to mine because that had a hot water tank and I asked her to please leave the hot water on for me to use and then I finally got hot water at that place he is only two apartments in that whole building had hot water apartment 3 and apartment 5 were the only one to hot water The others were controlled by those apartments apartment 5 the department four and apartment six hot water but if apartment 5 shut the water tank off nobody had it in four or five or six apartment three cover department 321 and it was sad it's still going on like that today slumlords are taking advantage of poverty in America forcing people to live in homes that are not up to code because it's the only thing people can afford The last card at my family and I had we got rid of just in time because the rear frame blew off the car because it was still rotted the car before that the day after we got rid of it the brake blew out on the car so I wish they were more charities and stuff to help the low-income family My aunts help my family and I out with food they bring food to us now and a blessed and thankful for that and now I do YouTube videos open and praying I can get over so many subscribers see that I can't find a job in America all I can rely on is my YouTube channel to try and gross subscribers and grow to make an income because no one in America Ohio a blind guy but on my YouTube channel I do automotive repair history lessons song writing and I go hike and being blind and I show being blind is not a disloady just an obstacle in life I had to overcome My stepfather always said Joe do you want to be like those blind people who sit there and feel sorry for themselves and try to pretend that they're not blind when they are or do you want to be the person in the future when you do lose your eyesight that don't let it hold you back and my stepfather made sure I went to camps and everything and I knew what to do before I even lost all my eyesight but you know what my stepfather's one I owe to that all for sending me to those camps and he treated me just like his own kid My stepfather had a saying no matter who he dated or who he is what if his kids couldn't go to something and the other person's kids could then he wouldn't be with that person if that person couldn't include his kid but everything they did with their kids then that ain't a relationship he said All kids need to be equal and when you're in a relationship you treat both kids the same one that are your stepchildren and your regular children the same or you don't get a relationship with someone kids but my stepfather passed away from a blood transfusion that the hospital did That's how my mother lost that man who gave us a house to actually live in a real house that was a house not apartment that was beautiful but if anyone's going through homelessness please things will get better start praying start praying to God God is there by your side you might not know it things will work out it is light at the end of the road
If they 14 and 8 they can work a part time job to help with some stuff like food
Especially 18
And yet they can help migrants
Man I used to complain about living with my relatives when my family and I were just coming back from Georgia because I thought I had it so bad but hearing this story really puts it all in prospective for me because complaining is never going to change situations yet one can change their attitude towards their circumstances. This family is so positive about their situation more than I can ever do in my lifetime.
They can live with me
Im so sorry your all going this that.. I know what it's like being poor especially when expenses comes around cause you never know what's going to happen.. I feel for all of you it's very sad hard and tough times. God is watching over you all and knows and sees what's going on. 😢
im not in america but also growing up low income like severely low, i need new clothes but my parents cant afford it, all my clothes are ruined and i need new clothes, i know its not my parents fault but i just wish i didn't have to cry myself to sleep for basic things like clothes or lack of food
We live in the richest country in the world no reason for anyone to live this way very sad now they want to help these sorry migrants coming over the boarder and all they want is a handouts
Can mom legally drive? If the answer is yes, buy hr a used Uhaul van. The 12-14ft vans. You now have a home. Yes she will have expenses but they are probably much more manageable. A van is an RV. While I concede it might not be optimal, it might beat constantly having to switch sleeping spots.
To the 18yo- join the military. There are 6 different branches of the armed forces, take the ASVAB and see where you fit. Unless the rules have changed, you should be able to claim both your mom and sister as dependents. Futher not every job sends you to a war zone, but EVERY JOB in the miltary gives you knowledge AND A SKILL! You will be eligible for a VA home loan WHILE you are in the service. You will have health care, also your dependents also get free health care. Finally, unless the rules have changed, upon your honorable discharge, the Federal government must give you preference for a federal job. I believe you have a 90 day window to have that door open to you. (Meaning you can skip the line and walk into the job.) Now mind you, not every job will be opened to you, and you might have to move, but still.
Good luck!
DJECA 😢
I love you Kyah! There are wonderful people who would love to help you and your family sweetheart. You are so mature and intelligent.I hope beautiful Kyah can relax in a Million Dollar Mansion one day!

Just speaking in general, I believe the best way is to live in multi generational situations, where several family members live in the same home. For example, once these girls become adults, get career training/college, and not have children early, they can get a home with their mother and have their own bedroom. Mexicans and ppl of other nationalities do it all of the time. That way, I someone loses a job, the others can step in to fill in the gap. It is likely that somebody will have a child, so having 2 other adults there, working different schedules can help with child care. We have got to change our American mentality that every family member must have their own house, especially if you are indigent.🩵
Bullshit! You are homeless because your mother is unskilled labor. She cannot care for herself let alone two children.
I remember watching this when it 1st aired. Always wondered how they all are doing “today†ðŸ™ðŸ¾
This is EXTREMELY EVIL WHAT IS BEING DONE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ALL PEOPLE
GO WORK AND HELP YOUR MOM MY FIRST JOB I WAS 13
Any money coming in from the children's father(s)…?
The easiest job to get(while difficult to actually work) is a CNA. They are in high demand, and you can always find a job. Mom can do agency as a CNA and earn A LOT.
The two older kids could get a job after school to help out or on weekends or babysitting or house keeping jobs it's something it is not unreasonable to have your older kids help or finically it helps them realize how munch things really do cost
The 18 year old can be working and helping momma
I think more Americans are living like this than people think.
i am 46 yo male and i never had any kids nor been married . I never tried having children because I didn't feel that I could afford them
They have enough money for the kids to have iPhones
I've been homeless before and it is so hard to come out of it. I finally was able to get a place and after 5 years my landlord sold the house and now I'm facing homelessness again due to the high cost of living. It sucks but I'll survive 🤷
I loved this life for about 12 yrs I’m 21 right now and I can say it’s terrible from 8 people in one room to borrowing electricity illegally just so my sisters and I could have Atleast a lamp in the apartment and moving over 15 times from sleeping in a van as of now I’m a US Army vet and is currently getting enrolled into college and my whole family is doing great now things can change in a matter of seconds. I hope everyone gets blessings and I’ll raise my son just born to be the best and I give all glory to god for giving me the strength to move from my environment
This Columbus… I bet the kids got Jordans on. 🙄
I live in Columbus. Wow.
Could someone please do something to help these kids?
