In this video I help a lady out who stores her truck over the winter. One of the issues is keeping the battery charged over that time. I install a “NOCO GENIUS2D, 2-Amp Direct-Mount Onboard Charger.” This should solve the issue and prevent her from having to start it every month. -Enjoy!

  1. I installed the same 2.0A Trickle Charger/Maintainer on my '21 GMC 1500 AWD as well. Connected to its battery posts. Wish its 110/120V electrical cord was 8"-12" longer. Hope their next version has a longer cord. It works. Its LED light blinks RED when charging up and solid green when fully charged. IMO, RED means a "problem". They should have a "flashing green" when charging up and a solid green when fully charged – like many other trickle charges. Hopefully, their next product version is made with a longer cord and better (more meaningful) LED light. Even with these design flaws, I bought another unit and installed on our "run about" 2014 AWD vehicle. When I plug its engine block heater in, I plug this charger in the same electrical cords. Works for me… I recommend to others…

  2. going to install one of these soon on my 2018 nissan rogue. i have 2 vehicles and alternate them. these newer vehicles are HELL on batteries with all the electronics and so forth.

  3. I installed on my vehicles, more for the winter months. When it gets cold and plug iin the car the BM is plugged in as well so it helps keep the battery up to par. Also my daughter does not drive very often so I plug hers in about once a month for a couple days in the summer as well. Seems to work great. Living in Sherwood Park, Alberta gets a few cold snaps. You have a great channel.

  4. Just got the 1amp NOCO Genius ! Staying away from "Battery Tenders Brand" keeping my truck NAPA Legend Charged ! Great Deal ! Thank you ALWAYS !

  5. Great video, I just added the same battery tender to my pick up trucks battery, but after three days, it's still slowly flashing the red light… When will the battery be fully charged?

  6. Coming to the party late, but if I bought a battery that was at 12.6v when measured, but the maintainer said it was at less than 75%, I’d wonder…..

  7. I have a perfect battery sized etching in my garage concrete floor of a battery that sat there over the winter. (Was it dirty when I placed it there? Probably that's the reasoning, residual acid or contaminants making a mark)
As for battery draw, I have a anti rust system that constantly draws a few mA. all of the time.
The origanal GM battery lasted 10 years before pooping out. Granted I have only put approximately 8600 miles a year on this 2014 Buick Regal GS and have only started using a battery Minder the last year now. It sits for 8 months of the year unused. But If I did not start the vehicle every month the battery was extremely low.
Use a battery minder of some sort in short.

  8. Good job making the video, it was very informative. I am very impressed with the Noco Genius 5 and 10 chargers. What is your opinion on battery desulfators for maintaining a battery? I use a Pulse Tech PowerPulse passive desulfator, they claim to have a patented frequency they use to desulfate batteries and can extend the life of a battery up to three times, I have been using it on my BMW battery for the past three years and never have any issue's starting even though I only drive about 25 miles per week.

  9. On my wife's car I do not having poking out the front grill on purpose. The hood up means more than just put the hood down before you drive away. Also, I smeared the connections with pure silicone dielectric grease; because of corrosion that needs to be sealed out.
I installed the positive on the positive battery terminal (because there was room), then the negative terminal on a grounded part of the body under the hood, on a bolt where a ground wire was attached.

  10. I do just as you have noted, but I put all our batteries on float chargers when they're not going to be used within a week or so. For vehicles used more frequently I give them a full charge maybe once a month. By doing this I get great battery life (those suckers have really increased in price!) I have one motorcycle battery that's still going strong and it's 14 years old. Another, which finally gave it up recently, was also 14 years old. It finally shorted between cells and went pop when I hit the starter. I'm sold on these kinds of chargers worth. In fact, what drew me to this video, I just ordered this NOCO charger to replace a much older charger, still doing its thing, but not as up to date.

  11. I use the NOCO one amp chargers for my motorcycles and lawn mowers. I permanently mount a NOCO pigtail on them for convenience so I don't have to bother with hooking them to the battery every time which is nice for motorcycles where the battery is buried. I have a Dodge Ram with a Cummins TD and I permanently mounted a two bank , two amp per bank charger in it because it does sit a lot. I used to use the Battery Tender brand, but the quality is just not there anymore so I switched to NOCO. So far, so good.

  12. NOCO makes good stuff.
Had problems with other maintainers keeping an AGM battery charged, installed a NOCO and the problem resolved.

That being said I do recommend AGM batteries for people that only use their vehicles periodically, lead acid batteries do like being used like this.

  13. That's technology for you – one step forward, two steps backward. Simplifying cars has gone out the window. They can be potentially more reliable, but where can you get a service/shop manual for your car nowadays?!!

  14. Hi Eric, I enjoyed your video! I am a senior lady that lives in a small town (Elliot Lake, Ontario) & I don't drive very much, tired of paying for boosts, so I bought the noco 2D. I understand the install, and I plan on keeping the charger plugged in, unless I'm driving my 2003 Buick Park Avenue. My question is about the cord, is the cord left poking out from the closed hood. Will the hood close properly with the cord there? or is it fed through bottom of car (as you see I'm quite car illiterate). I also bought one of the noco port plugs. I would prefer to close the hood tight rather than having a plug poking out.

    Thanks..Janice
