Ray, serious comment: life is really hard and stressful sometimes. Lots of pressures on all of us, seemingly. Being able to watch your attitude and craftsmanship most days is a real blessing. Seeing you approach your work with good humor makes me see that I can do the same thing, even on the hard days. Sorry for getting all mushy, but thanks for what you do. Sincerely.
So used to having bad tools, that i cringe when someone breaks a bolt with a ratchet instead of a breaking bar
I was freaking out because you installed the new pads WITHOUT SHIMS and went back and noticed it did not have them to begin with. That is strange the rear does but not the front. I guess the inboard pad clipping in and outboard having the spring clip eliminates the need for it, but that is still strange.
Kind of up selling front brakes aren't you?
I'm glad he's got his own shop now. But I sincerely wish he'd take more safety precautions – like always wearing gloves so the oil doesn't cause cancer! Like not reaching for the brake cleaner when a paper towel is sufficient.
yes I have one for my 69 beetle drive axel! it broke at the us / canada border, my dad
towed me home, then I went to the local used parts yard, after I got the tool, pulled
an axel, and put it on mine car. you always need those tools even if once! to get the job done!
Here hold this, guy stands there looking confused for awhile. Bwahahaha, awesome!
Oh boy… "Cheaper to replace than machine"? I know, it's a pencil-whipping nightmare, but the reality is, if there were no rotors available, and you aren't even going to go through a cutter? Like that time, when we left $85B in brand new equipment, because they said they couldn't afford the fuel to bring it out of Afghanistan~ That was AWESOME!
Too bad the shop doesn’t have a quick parts cleaner to quickly clean those beauty covers….
I never seen a guy that wastes so much product like brake cleaner and so on. Wonder who is paying for that.
VW loves those xzn bolts. My first tool kit bought in the mid 90s had those bits and I never needed them until 20 years later when I bought my first Volkswagen
Hi Ray, 08:17 "Here, hold this" is old psychological test where test subjects are on the phone and then they will receive all kind of stuff that they normally would not hold in their hand, but when You are on the phone, brain will not register danger or dislike. I laugh every time I see someone is using that technique to prank people. 🤣🤣🤣
"Eric O style reach around…" comedy gold, right there.
BTW- those only cost $4.99 according to what I've read on the bathroom walls.
Two questions I was told not to use brake clean on the rotors to clean the oily residue but to use just soap and water as some brake cleans can contaminate the new pads. Did the pads have a pin on the inner pad as some of those twin actuating calipers have
As a european mechanic if you can get the calipers off without a screwdriver thats when you should be worried
Are you a rawhide fan
Thumbs down. NOt nearly enough brake cleaner used. I am severely disappointed.
My ankle didn't feel a thing man. lol
I wear hiking boot type work boot things though. Took me FOREVER to find something that covered my ankle but was still ok to stand on all day
Never call it purple its murple
Good Humorous video and brake job @Rainman Ray's Repairs
Ya got a point why do wr need a license to handle refrigerant when anybody can buy it off the shelf at Walmart or any part stores like autozone and orileys or napa or target its sad @Rainman Ray's Repairs
I cut the side of my pinky from flush were the nail ends all the way down to the First knuckle couple days ago with 8 Inch Pruners helping my wife trim up her huckleberry its was a very red day I put it back and wrapped it and it's healing surprisingly @Rainman Ray's Repairs
LMAO …. here , hold this …………….just hold it all day lol …….have you sent him to Homestead for a box of sparks for the grinder …………or a 'long weight' (wait)
What I've learned is if I need to change my brake pads and rotors, I need a case of brake clean also. ðŸ‘ðŸ‘😂
Thanks for all your great videos Ray. Like many others I find them entertaining, interesting and relaxing. The only gripe I have, is that YouTube have recently started inserting Bill Gates adverts in the middle of some of your most interesting videos. I'm loathe to have to pay for ad-free subscription so if you can find a way playing some appropriate musical warning, before he pops up on the screen I'd be most grateful.
“It’s purple, that’s how you know it’s goodâ€
Oh yeee? Rays slatherin that purple nurple on
Good work ethic.
You sprayed brake clean into the slider hole, than shoved the slider pin with new grease into it without removing the brake clean, rear drivers side lower slider… Did you just forget you sprayed the hole? You could actually see it spray out partially as you put the slider pin in… Might as well have not greased it as it's going to wash itself off within the boot.
My question is why would or is there different bolts in the back and front mounts, one is hex and the other is a triple square style?
every time i compress the pistons the break fluid always seem to over flow in the master cylinder how do you stop this?
In 1988 I bought a 1980 VW Rabbit with 104,000 on the odo. For two long expensive years I drove it, in between break-downs, and I could not keep this piece of shet running. Whenever the engine got hot the car would not start! The starter was under the exhaust manifold, you see. And that was just for starters – eleictrical relays failed at random, engine having random missing at high rpm's, so many more I can't even remember. My dad took pity and loaned me $4000 to replace it. Got a 1982 Nissan Sentra, and this car was like night and day – nothing ever broke. Drove it for another 100,000 miles and made me a confirmed owner of the Tokyo tin.
Would you like to see rotors machined rather then tossed for new? Seems like we are in a throw away society now. Kind of a shame in my opinion. Break components might be a bad example as we don’t ever play with breaks as they are super important. Stopping is good. However just buying new is bad for our environment too. Hummm what do ya do???
Why not pull the caliper and bracket as a single unit instead of individually.
Those rear calipers needed to be replaced. Once they show signs of hanging up they are toast.
If you need to replace one you need to replace both!!!!!!!
Rear calipers went on my golf at 60k miles. Great idea but very cheaply executed as is a lot on V dubs. Never again
VW's allow you to open and close the windows by pressing and holding the lock/unlock buttons, let's out some of the Florida sunshine from the car.
Hallo uncle Ray. Love your uploads. In far off South Africa I drive a very old Citi Golf ( you will know them as a Mk1 or a Rabbit) and the CV joints have those same pesky fasteners. So the first time you replace a CV boot, you replace them with normal hex bolts which is not prone to stripping.
Have a great one
Why, VW? Why? Why would you use two different fasteners to accomplish the same thing on the same car?
I’m a VW fanboy, but I absolutely hated this generation of Jetta/Passat. Ugly as sin. Naturally aspirated 5 cylinder? 🤮 and they done screwed the pooch again this year dropping the Passat from their lineup. No affordable full sized sedan from das auto for you!
I remember the days when rotors cost $12 each to machine at Napa. I guess $20 rotors make that less cost effective nowadays
Pro tip for removing stuck rotors. Run a large bolt through the brake bracket bolt hole and thread a nut on the other side. Keep tightening until it pushes the rotor off. Super easy, no pounding
Ray I ran across your channel while watching Eric O. And thought it was one of his videos then was confused but watched anyways and have been hooked since! Great job brotha!
Good video as usual. I am a little surprised you didn't replace the rubber boots and the rusty slide pins. The boots are cheap and would likely seal better.
I did a rear brake job on my daughters 2013 Jetta, and I have no parking brake on left side. Ideas on fixing it?
