In this video we have a look at 2004 GMC 1500 5.3 that came in with a customer complaint of “no four wheel drive.” The shop said it has a code C0327 “Encoder Circuit Malfunction” stored in it. They also said that the encoder motor was replaced along with the transfer case AND the vehicle had been taken to the dealer in an attempt to repair it. They gave up so now it’s our turn. -Enjoy!

  1. Thanks for the video Eric have the same code on my 2012 colorado now i have a place to start looking bye the way the link for the wiring diagram did not work but thank you anyway .

  2. I have a 1999 ford f150 4×4 front wheels do not lock in i remember want my dad said if you need 4×4 to get there maybe I should not be there i can see alot of true in that statement

  3. Unbelievable I have an 04 Avalanche I watch this video because I was having the same problem I took it off and a mouse had got up there and ate the wires just like your video I could not believe it unbelievable if not for your video I probably would have never checked that

  4. Awesome. I have a Hummer H2 after watching your video multiple times I gained the confidence to attack my issues (same symptoms). The system is a little different with the H2 but I pinned the wires looking for discontinuity and BOOM found the wire, it was the low reference. I couldn't find an obvious break so I replaced it from the engine compartment down to the encoder motor. Thanks man… 7 years later.

  5. Like the video having same problem with my 2005 Silverado tried the link with the diagram of the wires, but it will not open says an error. Is there anyway you can repost the link, please?

  6. Yeah dealerships just steal your money! Been there been scammed! I found a electrical shop and they fixed the problem the dealership quoted me 3,800$ to fix but after I did everything I could and let them do the programming which was still 800$ and another electrical shop fixed the problem with a 65$ part and 80$ diag fee that he helped me out and put diag fee to labor and my problem was fixed same day! I will never go to dealerships again other than buying parts when I have to!
On a side note I love this video! I’m fairly sure my encoder ring is bad. But I will now check the fuse box cover just to check the area for any mice nests!
One question tho….. isn’t the transfer case supposed to make a clunk noise when going to 4lo? Or could something be wrong with my 04 Tahoe lol I gotta clear my transfer case code and then I can push the 2wd button and it will work… next time I turn key back on tho it could be in any gear! And sometimes the button works and sometimes I have to clear the code to be able to shift it again. It’s very annoying! Only does it when I switch it to 4wd and then it could do it none or could do it for weeks until some day it catches the sweet spot on the encoder ring just think.

  7. I would of never thought to look next to the fuse box under there same problem all 6 wire's chewed threw.. 🤦🤦 your a time saver thanks for sharing got it running perfect

  8. i know this is an old video but still great value! i bought a encoder motor from amazon and when i plug it in i get a C0327 code and no lights on the dash but when my old motor is plugged in i get a C0306 code and have the 2wd indicator light come on. any suggestions?

  9. Love these kind of finds. Some times it’s the “let me just look over here real quick before I go any further.” And there it is.

  10. I live in tampa fl. Moved 33 years ago from cinti oh. I haven't had cold like you have since. You should move here. Garages here are worse than where you are. It needs complete wiring harness. Lol

  11. Man I love your videos you are very detailed , I'm working on a 2005 gmc 1500 and I'm having issues with my transfer case put a new encoder motor on and I can't get it to do anything 4wd switches are stuck in neutral tried a used tccm and still nothing couldn't find any good info about voltage or a diagram but your video helped a bunch , I have a Autel maxidas 808 but I'm not very good at using it not very knowledgeable lol gonna see if I can get anywhere with your video I was about to give up ,
    Thank you

  12. Don't know if you'll see this comment, but great job on showing exactly what you did at each step along the way. I have the exact same code on an exact same vehicle and I have rodents that like to find their way into the truck – maybe I'll go straight to looking under the fuse box cover to see if somebody has set up housekeeping! I would really like to fix this with a single wire repair that I don't have to stand on my head to get to!
