  5. Hi There im 57 and from new zealand. Ive done alot of wrenching in past years on my 66 401 buick, many chev v8s plus in the early days on a lot of the badly built and badly engineered english cars (sorry englishmen but its true) like humbers morrises hillmans etc. later on I moved into hands on maintenance on industrial vehicles of all types and also hands on factory mechanical maintenance.
    I later spent 17 years as a works engineer managing the maintenance workshop at a plywood factory where as well as maintenance of all the vehicles, and plywood making machinery, with my team of 7 top engineers we would do ground up from foundation to full rebiulds and installation of numerous plywood making machinery which we usually imported. I was the project manager and was in charge of up to 20 extra engineers and other tradespeople.

    I picked up a few skills along the way. Im impressed with your high level of enthusiasm and many skills for someone so young. You are getting there but I just have to give you a bit of advice. When you are doing any assembly of anything you care about, cleanliness and attention to detail come first. Picking bits or engine up of a concrete floor and bolting them together makes me cringe. Time spent organizing your workspace and attention to detail will pay off bigtime in the longrun.

    It looks like you have a decent workbench. Why grovel around picking bits up off the floor? Try spending a bit of time cleaning off your bench, then get your engine bits as clean as possible and lay them out on your bench in approximate order that you will need them. Hget yourself a gd supply of cleaning rags or similer, some cans of brake clean or similar, airguns, brushes, a washdown gun and some cheap solvent and whatever and use them. Take your engine stand and motor to near to the bench. clean your tools before you start assembling and dont keep them on the floor. Have your loctite, anti sieze, assembly lube, gasket sealer etc on your bench and have a place for them and everything in its place. Speaking of assembly lube, how about putting some on your camshafts and cam bearings and wherever else required? Dont slap it together and hope. Make it right. Yes, I know sometimes you have to use ductape and baling wire, but dont make a career out of it.

    Do the best work you can in the time available. If you dont have enough time, then make some more. You definitely have talent but you are very inexperienced. The fastest way to get experience is by doing and learning from to the most experienced people you can. Talk to them and pick their brains. Be respectful and LISTEN. Talented people are usually the most generous people when it comes to sharing their knowlege. get a good mentor if you can. Pick the most successful person that you want to be like and copy them and their ways. Keep doing hard yards. Theres many posers (think vehicle virgins) and extremely enthusiastic performers (cletus?) and pretenders ( i wont name any but I bet you can think of some) out there with popular channels, but you seem to be a doer. You will find the harder you keep doing, the luckier you will get!

    You have a great future ahead if you if you use your natural talents wisely. Sorry If I seem like a grumpy old man but the only reason Im bothering to write this is because I can see your potential. You have more than most. Keep at it and keep that rapid learning curve going, but remember, more speed, less haste!

    Im enjoying watching your progress and successes and Im not too old to admit Ive learned a few new things from you.
