  2. Dropping the steering rack is a really, really, really, really, REALLY bad idea.
    My automotive engineering thesis was trying to fix the steering geometry of a Lancia 037 that was converted to 4wd hybrid (the steering rack was lowered and moved back to make space for the front motor and differential), without changing the knuckle and with very limited space to move the steering rack (millimeters) and the short answer was is not possible.
    If you moove the steering rack you're going to experience sudden understeer to oversteer transition, uneven tyre wear and very bad driveability/steering feel because of bump steer and excessive toe alteration during the suspension travel.

  3. so, if you change the steering rack height in relation to the knuckle you will change the bump steer. it will handle differently. use a different rack, an electric rack. talk to a software guy about a reflash

  4. Sweat if you had left the engine on the front subframe and see how the body sat over the engine, think about it the side rails are way too high off the ground right now . Not trying to give negative advice donut the way you are mounting the engine it's too high off the ground

  5. Lowering the steering rack will affect steering slightly and you may need longer rods. Whether it is detrimental to your driving experience I guess depends on you. You will probably have slightly reduced steering angle. You may be able to mitigate by putting a spacer, equal to the distance you lowered the rack, between the steering rod and the upright tie in point. You can do some quick trig to calculate the impact of lowering the rack on the steering otherwise.

    Prior video, but what’s the idea for the interior? Are you thinking raw race car inside? Or creating a sweet luxury/cool interior?

  7. B is for boss! You sir are a boss for taking this on. Once the body, engine and suspension are located this build is going to go faster than you think. Also don’t worry about the bump steer, nothin a few dial indicators and some spacers can’t fix. Great work!

  8. Hi Chris. Since you still need to change the frame rails in de cabin, isn't it an option to extend that section a bit to lengthen the front frame rails. Creating a bit more space so that the engine can sit behind the steering rack. And than you can just extend the bonnet to meet up with the cabin again. Using extra sheet metal to lengthen the front section of the car.

  9. Can't you use an aftermarket ECU to control everything? That way you can have a custom steering rack without having to worry about BMW electronic crap.

  10. Dude you gonna cut the shit out of another 240, the one you got is tweaked but hell of a lot less work than sourcing and cutting up…… You fixed the Lotus! You can fix this body……your are Chris from B is for a Build, you can fix anything!

  11. Changing steering rack positipn will drasticly change the steering parameters and steering wheel. Bumpsteer and feel will be most affected. To get more up to speed on this, read motoiq.com articles "ultimate suspension guide"

  12. Good luck chasing your tail with this one. Every time you move something to create room you will be creating another clearance issue.
