As some of you know this job had a personal connection for me. My friend Ryan Coffey, who was the former owner of the truck, lost his life to cancer last year. His parents brought me the truck and a new engine so that I could make it run again. I was honored to do the job, and make this video series for you. I present this series as a tribute to Ryan and his family. I know you guys like watching my engine replacement videos, and I’m glad to know that this series will get some views and get Ryan’s name out there. Ryan loved my show and having his truck featured in my videos, it’s been in 3 before this series came out. I think this is a great way to honor him and his memory.   5. Suggestion. Get a hat to attach your camera to. I think it will help with some of the shots. Thank you so much for making this video! I recently swapped my engine in my 98 s10 and your tips and tricks helped me finish it up and also solve the mystery of that AIR system. My 99 engine uses an egr and i thought i just had extra parts. But we figured it out thanks to you!

  6. Sorry for your loss. What was the reason for the engine swap? Not running? Blown head gasket? Knocking? High mileage and just clapped out low compression?

  7. Thank you Eric. I realized today that I was looking for working principles. I have no experience, 63 years old and I’m going for it. With this kind of guidance, Toyota 3.0 to 3.4 swap.

  9. You are a really good mechanic I took the head off my 2.2 leave the intake manifold on it and exhaust manifold so when you put the head on the other engine you don't have to mess with the intake

I’m on the same page with personal connection to an s10 I now have my moms it was the only thing she really had in her life that she truly loved other than me but the last time I saw and spoke to her she said to me I’m gonna give you my truck and at the time I didn’t think about it and I said mom what am I going to do with your truck and she said fix it up well I just blew it off and ya ma and told her I loved her and went to work well later that night she passed away so now I’m gonna completely rebuilt it and give it to a single mother as I remember when me and my mom didn’t have a car when I was younger I think she would like that

  15. Great… now I gotta rebuild my 2002 Sonoma because I was going uphill in 5th on the highway… got wicked pre-ignition and the piston rings collapsed in from the heat and lost all compression

  17. Great vide Eric. One question can i replace the engine from my sons 1999 Sonoma with a 2001 s10 They both are 2.2L. The 2001 is a flex fuel and the 1999 is not

  18. I have a Chevy P/U with this 2.2 and I was absolutely hating the idea that I had to crawl up under this thing and try to get bolts off. Well it turns out that if you get your head at the tail of the transmission and look forward you can see all the bolts and access them all…Use an impact wrench and the bolts zip right out.

  22. im trying to replace my exhaust manifold on a 1998 s10 2.2 but there is a steel plate where the ac compressor sits, and i cant remove it, i remove 2nuts attatch to the head and i think there is a third one under the plate but i think is a permanent nut, is there a bolt coming from the power steering ? help me please

  36. Good series. Was thinking about picking one of these up on CL, but I think I'll pass. The other truck I was looking at was a Mazda B4000. I own a 99 Mazda Protoge 1.6L now and have had nothing but a good experience. The B4000 has good reviews across the board.

  38. I did a clutch and slave cylinder on one of these. It was not fun. Especially when the catch cup I was using to bleed the slave cylinder fell and dumped the fluid directly into my mouth.

    There's a story about an automotive engineer back in the late 60's when they were just about getting cars easy to work on. The engineer came home and caught his wife in bed with a mechanic. He told his buddies and they've been screwing us back ever since.

  40. looks like somebody has had the shifter out , I don't see the big rubber thing that goes under the body around the bottom of the shifter
