1. Can you ground the alternator to the body of the car to help eliminate engine noise to the car audio system?

2. If a person were to have not diconnected the battery what might short out? I did just that and now two new alternators have not worked in my Suburban.

3. What are your thoughts on high output alternators. Most say to cut your belt to fit their smaller pulley. does this put a strain on anything or make serp belt not last as long? Thanks for any help.

5. Wonderful video and very detailed. Im in school for auto mechanic and I learned the same way to remove an alternator as u just did , however the sand paper part was not mentioned and I know that just doing that will make a huge impact. Thanks for the video

6. The advice about knowing when to disconnect the battery before wrenching around is worth listening to.
   I once fried my ABS pumps HCU while doing what I thought was a simple project cause I thought  "well I'll just be careful, I know what I'm doing."
    Yeah right 20 seconds saved to avoid having to look for a wrench to disconnect my battery earned me 1/2 a day spent rooting around a salvage yard looking for a replacement part.

7. Thanks!! Question-Is it true that after all the charging(your previous vids)..that if I tap a flathead screwdriver to the alternator with the car running, it should stick to the alternator like a magnet..? Mine didnt obviously…

8. I hAve a sonoma 98 ,and its a 2.2 .
   I have fix the starter,then put new battery ,and alternator in it. But when I start it the reading on the alternator reads low when it runs. I was heading to the beach when I looked done at the dash and seen no dash lights or dash gauges.What could be the problem? Plz right back

9. eric have you ever seen a -11.23 on a tester reading off the charging. i have gone through 4 batts, rebuilt, changed 4 alts. its a 1990 1 ton crew cab chevy dually. any brain storming will help…thanks

10. Honda Alternators have this black cover on the positive cable with double nuts. When you trying to remove it, it likes to spin around. Is there a special tool or method for removing without spinning the connection and end up breaking the black plastic cover surrounding the double nuts?

18. Eric,

    your videos continue to help me learn more about taking care of vehicles i own and be less afraid to do the repairs myself. I used the steps in your parisitc battery draw vid, and then alternator testing 101 to help find my problem and solution(bad alternator or bad internal recitfier/regultor). I saved myself the trouble of renting a car and sending in for repairs. I'm learning that the troubleshooting process used with vehicles is not much different from IT.

21. the rectifier was bad in the alternator, sending current the wrong way thru the automotive circuit, frying that pin in the ecu.
    because we sent it to a shop to have it tested, and was found that it was the cause of the computer being fried(2 of them) the manufacturer will be reimbursing for the ecu's and paying for the new alternator for the customer… Last I heard, Wilson, (the manufacturer in this case), hasn't done anything about the reimbursement of parts.

22. The paper in the box may not matter. I replaced an alternator that wasn't charging the battery, went to start the vehicle, and it just cranked without starting. After some electrical diagnosis, we found a pin on the ECU(AutoShutDown relay) fried, and replaced the ECU. The truck still didn't start. The same pin in the ECU had fried. We took the alternator out and sent it to get it tested at a local shop.The rectifier was faulty.So, the alternator test sheet can be ignored. Looks photocopied 😛

23. Also for us armatures it's best to just swap the alternator, rather than scratching head over which part of it is gone. A re-manufactured one is usually less than 50 euros and comes with a 2 year warranty.

24. im gunna ask a dumb question so be ready . when would someone find themselves getting a shock from a cars electricalsystem. in other words i need to know what i have to do to get shocked in order to avoid it . also what parts of the car are known to shock people?

25. clap clap clap! Im an expert in 12v and 16v charging systems. You should check out my 07 WK. The frist wk with dual high output alts! You need to check out dc power alternator, its what I run. Crazy load from my system iv clamped over 400amps on my fluke337 from just 1 of my alts @ 2k and over 200amps at idle speeds. 🙂

28. @Lokivoid Indeed but as a technician you often just want to get the job done so you normally end up replacing the entire unit to avoid a comeback. Thanks for your input.

33. @turkaljd You'd never get sulfuric acid to evaporate to the point where it becomes a solid. It's highly hygroscopic – you'd get an oily residue before anything else.

    That white powder is lead sulfate, an acidic salt. It forms when sulfuric acid vapor creeps up or vents around the terminals and contacts the lead poles. Water just washes a somewhat acidic solution all over the rest of your engine bay – which could cause rust or oxidation of any exposed steel, iron or copper connectors.

38. @64460242 you don't need boiling water. True it will dissolve that white powder (which is sulfuric acid). But you can do it easier by just dissolving some baking soda in water and cleaning it up that way ( which will neutralize the acid). Boiling water seems like it could damage something or burn you. Plus once the water evaporates the acid will deposite somewhere else (wherever the water goes). Not very safe.
