Honda Accord Valve Adjustment – EricTheCarGuy

This one was a request from a couple of viewers, I like to keep you all happy so here you go. This video is actually taken from a larger video I call “Accord Smackdown”, in it I replace the timing belt, radiator, a major service, and some other stuff that I don’t remember. I think there will be a couple more videos from this “smackdown” in the future, there is some good stuff in there that I think you will like and possibly learn from. If you have other topics you would like covered don’t hesitate to let me know, I’m happy to give you what you want. Post them as text or video responses to this or any of my videos.

I’m going to get the part number for the tool I used in the video sometime next week and post it here so keep your socks on and check back sometime next week.

  1. Hey Eric, I have adjusted the valves twice and still have a ticking sound. I had oil in the spark plug tube. So I replaced the o rings on the valve cover gasket. Would a ticking sound be coming from oil getting in the lower gaskets? Under the valve train housing?

  3. Eric hi, please help me, I’ve Accord 2004 k20a6 engine with 200k-km and made cams adjustment, engine take little detonation and vibrations specially free revs in drive made, can u help what’s problem??

  4. Eric I love your videos it’s always refreshing to see the way other guys work and it’s obvious you are a very experienced Honda mechanic! I always pick up a couple pointers watching your videos, I like to think I could figure things out on my own but your hints and tricks they make me a better mechanic and I love these cars more every day. Keep it up!

  5. according to the "as cold as possible" – what if the outside temperature when doing valve clearance is around -5 degree Celsius? Can it affect the adjustment in some way?

my garage is not heated and I heard all those clearances are given by the "normal garage" temperature around 15-20 degrees Celsius

  6. I have a 01 honda accord v6 and have issues after driving a while then parking and when I try to restart sometimes it rough starts and wont want to start like its running out of fuel or air. Happens mostly when driven a while. I changed the valve cover gaskets and new spark plugs and coils. Any thing else I can do ?

  7. Sorry this is something I never heard mentioned before so I have to ask. After finishing the valve adjustment, does the engine need to be turned back into a certain position again before putting the valve cover back on and starting it up ? Or can you just leave it in whatever position you had in for the fourth cylinder and then start it up like normal ?

  8. I'll…. just worry about this later! My main concern is the head gasket itself right now! Just got done installing DNA full system headers, catalytic converter, and exhaust! It's a budget build so hush (note: experimental build before I going into the real deal! I wanna see what the eBay got to offer)! It's an old honda accord to toy around

  9. Hey, got a 2004 Honda element no code map engine but at idle in the morning and when motor is warm, I'm getting around negative 15 both short term and long term. It smells of exhaust gasses quite heavily but engine doesn't run rough at all and only symptom I'm having is I feel I should have more power. Have new oem air fuel sensor and the rear o2 as well. All my live data looks normal like map, ect, ait, etc. Do you think since these engines need to have their valves adjusted and it's a new to me car with 160k, that valves being out of adjustment can cause a rich condition? Thank you.

  10. EricTheCarGuy.I have a 2011 Accord 3.5 exl with 190k. There's a major ticking in the morning when I start it. It's been happening for several months now. Timing belt has never been changed. I purchased it when it had 94k. I have driven it hard at times, never race tho haha ,it's a Honda accord. The ticking goes away after a few mins of idoling. What are your thoughts? Where is your shop located

  11. Hey Eric. Really need your help. I took my 94 accord lx to a mechanic after my timing belt snapped. He wants over a grand to replace the timing belt and to check the valves for damage and possibly replace them. He says that to check the valves, he has to remove the head of the engine, exposing the head gasket and would have to automatically replace the head gasket as well. Is all that necessary and do you think i can do it all on my own?

  12. Did you bend those feeler gauges yourself or did they make em like that?

Can I buy just those two sizes, and, can I get them at NAPA?

I have a short set of gauges, but I see the longer ones will make it easier.

First my alternator, and now a valve adjustment. Couldn't have done it without you. Thanks Eric. 🤠

  13. hello I have CRV 2009 ex 4wd 209000 km. there is no check engine light. the engine make some noise and vibration at idle and hard accelration power . the cylindre compresion is correct I have change spark plugs. there is no leake and coil , injector are correct. After scan honda say ther is misfire in cylindre 4 at idle. after check they propose first a valve ajustment and if the problem stay there propose chain kit change. what you think . if i change chain kit does the engine will be correct or it is better change engine. thank you

  14. So I have a 97 accord and I have adjusted the valves many times and it still ticks REALLY BAD. I’ve always thought I’ve had it at the base circle of the cam to rocker arm by putting it directly 180 degrees opposite. Is there a possible other thing that could make a tick noise? It happens on accelerations and decelerations.

  15. Hello, nice video
On my 2008 odyssey 3.5L, 117K miles, I removed the valves cover to adjust the valves. But I shock to see one head so dirty and the other one (rear) nice and clean, WHY?????? Please help me, if need to remove head, bad oil lubrication?? I changed the oil every 3-4K, since 23K.
