Honda Element Clutch Diagnosis and Replacement

My brothers 2005 Honda Element was having a strange issue with the clutch. Even with the pedal depressed, it seemed like the clutch was still engaged making it difficult to shift gears.

In this video I diagnose the problem and replace the clutch. For additional information on this job, see the engine replacement videos linked below.

  1. Everytime I have had bolt like that subframe one, I end up with a bolt head in the wrench and the rest still in the car, that horrible feeling of a bolt shearing off as you add pressure.

  2. Is there a more lit close up of the flywheel? In the video it looked very pitted and almost rusty. At the very least from what I saw it very much needed a resurface.

  3. Wish I'd have a penny for everyone I seen put in backwards, look at the springs on clutch and see if it has shiny surfaces, if it does fly bolts got it, many don't realize.

They work backwards untill sum of the padding wears on disc then no clutch. I learnt the hard way, Freightliner with Detroit 60 with Eaton 18 speed dual clutch it sucked.

  4. Dang that’s a lot of work because someone took some shortcuts…..that’s why I do all my repairs on my cars, it’s hard to find a good mechanic you can trust. There are only a few Eric’s out there. 😊

  5. I changed 4 clutches on my 1980 Honda Accord I had. I put a Japanese used engine in it and it didn't have a place for the pilot bearing in the back of the crank. The springs would fall out and would stay in gear. Cost me a red light ticket once. In 81 they incorporated the pilot bearing into the transmission. I wasn't smart enough back then to go get an 81 standard transmission and fix it right.

  6. Recording a clutch job is a huge PITA. Pure coincidence, I literally just recorded removing a 2000 Maxima clutch, last night.
I (tried) to remove as little as possible, on the ground, in a driveway, passenger side up against a tree ……….ugh.
Much more fun to watch someone else doing it!
