How I LOST a LOT of MONEY Rebuilding a SALVAGE Car: When a Rebuild goes Bad (Money Pit Jetta GLI)

Well guys this is how much I lost rebuilding the Jetta GLI. It was a costly mistake. I discuss how much I “lost” but I won’t see the entire amount for a while. Live and learn. Also I forgot to include my seat belt repair costs in this video which equaled about $200.

If you want to rebuild a salvage car, watch some of my other videos, they will help you immensely. You can do well and mess up rebuilding a salvage car. This is an example of when things go bad.

  2. IMO it would have been helpful to have some kind of spreadsheet on screen with the costs, with everything updated as soon as Sam discusses it. because I'm 4 minutes in and can't follow at all how he got the 5800 dollar already.

  3. Do not plasti dip them ,I recondition wheels for a living and plasti dip looks good at 1st but dull out and the brack dust melts into them

  6. Listen… nobody gets ripped off short of a phone scam on the elderly or preying on people with cognitive disabilities…. Do you fall in one of those categories??? If you pay the price for something you can see and is tangible to inspect and you cannot beat a person down on price then you paid what the market dictates… Don't go off saying some local guy ripped you off for something he had and it (the part) was what you needed and you could inspect prior to purchasing and you AGREED to his selling price and bought… I rebuild VW's for profit all the time and yes sometimes I just pay more than I what I feel the part is worth because I need it yesterday, but that's my fault and if I pay for the part then that's just what the part costs…. I never belly ache about a part I agreed to buy for an agreed price.

  7. On the other hand, one can find a nice Mercedes Benz SL500 pre 2000 in good shape and well maintained (that is the most important) for $9500 to $12000 depending on the miles.

  8. Really good video on your learnings and thanks for sharing ! I've just started checking Copart here in Ontario and had kind of shied away from cars that all / most of the airbags had gone off. How big a factor is that ? Is it difficult on most cars to replace them and expensive too ? How much of a factor is that to you ? Love your channel, keep up the great work ! Cheers

  10. We can all armchair but Sam is doing it and I appreciate the knowledge even if I never go so far as to take on a salvage unless it was for me. Salvage where I am is a death sentence on anything with some value. Like Sam said an older Hondoo or Yoda that gets done because it has some miles is a good choice. For me if it is parts swapping only, if you are taking bodywork and paint forget it as labor rates are high. We have a very strict inspection now which even covers 3 levels of fluid leaks which can be extremely labor intensive to fix. I mainly do bicycles and barbecues as all my parts come from other ones except for brake pads, the odd chain sometimes tires.

  13. Too late now, but a big no to gold wheels. Rich Rebuilds did a video on his Tesla wheels, they came out really well. I notice you haven't included the cost of your labour, do you treat it so much as a hobby that you work for free?

  15. Very good video. I and my son are getting into these type of project cars for a hobby also. Gold – not really my favorite but it depends on the tone/shade and ones personal preference. Thanks again for the video, I learned allot.

  19. $95 is pretty good for a headlight, so was $91 for a wheel and 4 caps (Assuming they are in good to very good condition)

  20. Restoring a crashed granny car seems pointless as a salvage title never goes away. Step it up and buy some crashed supercars.
