Increasing AC Performance by Cleaning Your Condenser -EricTheCarGuy

Increasing AC performance by cleaning your condenser was a surprise to me. My friend and forum moderator Paul Krawsek aka College man, turned me onto this. He works in HVAC and was telling me about the benefits of cleaning condenser coils. He says one of the biggest reasons that AC systems fail is due to increased head pressure in the compressor. Higher pressures equal more heat. The increased heat breaks down the lubricant. Once that happens, it’s not long before the compressor fails. One way to keep down compressor temperature is to lower high side pressures in the AC system. You can do this by increasing the condensers efficiency by cleaning it. Honestly, I was amazed at the result. This really works and doesn’t require that you open the AC system at all to do it. So if your AC isn’t working as good as it should, you might try this process to see if it helps.

  1. This procedure worked great for me! My condensir was dirty, so was the radiator behind it. I sprayed the dilution over condensor, and radiator( as much as i could). Used a fine spray from garden hose, then blew compressed air straight in, and ditto for radiator. Just by seeing the diff before and after. System has to work more efficiently. Thank you Eric!

  2. Someone else probably already mention this but the reason the fin comb does not work is because that’s a microchannel coil I believe, and I don’t think you can comb those. Fin combs are use to comb fin on coils.

  3. Eric, the vent temp can't go below 38℉. There is a thermostat switch that shuts off the compressor when it gets that low. This is why your supposed to do the vent temp check with the fan at max with the vent on recirculate and the doors open (says so in the helms). Running the system at max won't bottom out the temp, instead it maxes out the capacity of the system and then you will see a difference in vent temp.

  4. I'm confused by your pressures. According to a chart I found, at 84 degrees ambient, pressures for the low side should be between 45-55 psi, and high side should be between 225-250 psi. One would be inclined to add R134a to the system if they just went on the pressures. However, the 39 degrees air temp from the vents would indicate that the system is fine. What is your take on that Eric?

  5. Perhaps using distilled water in the sprayer while mixing the solution would eliminate the fears of water causing future corrosion in the condensor. Perhaps also after spraying cleaning solution refill sprayer with 100 % distilled water to rinse. Then air dry with a fan. Id be against using anything with lye in it. Just because bottle says its safe to use doesnt mean you have to use it. If something weaker will work id go that route. I believe the preservation of the material would be extended.

  6. I just replace a leaking ac condenser/trans cooler on a 13 Durango and it had leaked some trans fluid on radiator causing debris to accumulate on it so i wanted to clean that off. Keeping in mind the fragility of the material it was made of i did the following. Took an empty standard size dishwashing detergent squirt bottle and mixed a 50/50 solution of dawn and water. Squirted this container full twice over the crud allowed to sit 10 minutes, then filled same container with water only twice squirted over the area twice to rinse. Looked great, nastiness removed. Environmentally safe , effective, and minimal cost. Enjoy you videos. Great help.

  7. I just did this to my GMC acadia cause it would over heat driving up steep hills on the freeway on with the ac on before watching this video. The difference is I bought a spray can for cleaning ac condenser coils for about 5 dollars at home depot did the work took the front bumper off sprayed it on waited 5 minutes and rinsed. I put it back together the following day and drove up a 6% grade with ac on and no more overheating and the ac was colder 👍👍

  8. Eric I have special treatment for the automotive AC . That will bring the high side pressure and increase the low side pressure. The result ,better cooling, no tripping and faster cooling. 95 % of the AC load will be removed from the engine. AC on or off will not make any difference to the engine. As a result better mileage. Reply if you want to know more and use it .

I have fixed many car ac by letting freon out because of over charging.I charged my Yukon in spring and it got hotter raising the pressure quit cooling.My heater control valve had a cracked vacuum line.Hot coolant was heating the cooled air when it warms up.The rear air worked fine.When you come up with a blank re think it you have more information now than ever.

  10. ☆☆ATTENTION☆☆: I was about to use this method to clean my condenser, but before I did, I called Nu-Calgon's tech support line, and they explicitly said NOT to use this product on automotive condensers nor even RESIDENTIAL household coils!!! This product is intended for very thick commercial/industrial aluminum and copper coils. I spoke to two different guys, and they told me that it is WAAAY to agressive for thin aluminum, and will strip a molecular layer off the surface metal, reducing the lifespan and leading to premature leaks. Mr. Eric, please don't take any more risks. They told me to try Tri-Pow'r HD, which is also their product, and better suited. I might just even take my car to the car wash and just use the degreaser spray setting just to be safe.

  12. You should do this to your home a/c condenser each month with just water to flush out spider webs, tree pollen, dust and dirt to keep you system running effeciently. Here in the midwest the cottonwoods release their seeds which clog up your a/c and no air is running through the condenser.

  13. A new hand held wire brush with straight bristles works fairly well as long as you follow fins. It should be done like your home unit at least once a year. Not only possibly make it work better, less pressures on whole system. Seals ,O rings,hoses are less likely to leak.

  14. Condenser coil maintenance is usually neglected in HVAC yet is a vital component. A dirty condenser coil not only reduces system efficiency but will also shorten the life of the compressor over time (higher refrigerant temperatures & pressures). By design, the evaporator coil stays clean because it has an air filter (if changed regularly) but the condenser coil is exposed to the elements. Both coils have to be clean for maximum airflow & top efficiency.

  15. So the cleaning product is basically a weaker version of oven cleaner.
    I suppose it would also work on AC evaporators (you probably could’ve hit 34 at the vents if you sprayed it up the drain tube), heater cores and radiators too.
    Making the AC and cooling systems work more efficiently will improve your MPGs slightly and reduce emissions.
