“OTC announced today its ‘Diagnostics for Life’ program and new Bravo 2.0 software in North America for the Encore diagnostic tool. Providing a lifetime warranty on hardware, expanded technical service hours and a software overhaul, efforts were based on direct Encore owner feedback. This critical update, Bravo 2.0, is provided for every Encore owner with or without an active diagnostics subscription. Technicians will see a faster, more stable tool with additional vehicle coverage and a reduction in screen-to-screen waiting times.”

I had the chance to use this tool for a while before I did the review. I even took it to Pittsburgh and showed it to ScannerDanner. We agree that it’s a capable tool but perhaps a bit slow. I’m no expert, but I think it has something to do with the processor used. That said, it still has a lot of great features and at this price point, I think it’s a great value. The Encore really shines when you add features like Identifix. With just a few clicks, you’re well on your way to a diagnosis. The Android operating system also makes it easy to learn and use. All around, I think the OTC Encore is a great tool and represents a transition into the next generation of scan tools.

  1. Some concerns after purchasing an OTC Encore:

I found that none of the three ports were usable to export data from the scanner! The two USB ports do not work and the Save to SD card option doesn’t work. I verified with OTC Support that the ports do NOT work. The only way to get info out is through a wireless connection. If you don’t have a wireless connection or cannot use wireless because of a sensitivity to electromagnetic fields and want to transfer data or access the web—forget it. They could have included an Ethernet cable port.

I found that I could not set up an email account for Outlook. I understand that it is because the Android OS is old. OTC Support told me that it is not updatable. I have updated my OS in my phone, I am pretty sure and of course various computers can be updated.

Another significant issue is that to make the email function with Gmail, you HAVE to turn on less secure email access. I have had an email account hacked so this is totally unacceptable.

I also have found that the display can be hard to see at times when the ambient light is bright.

  2. probably doesn't have the air suspension, but if my 20 year old ford SUV (98 expedition) has an immobilizer stock from factory as standard on ALL trims, i find it hard to believe that a 13 year old toyota suv doesn't

  3. Love the tool hate that I have to connect to wifi. How much per month extra is it for idetifix after the free two months. For 1,500 should be faster but still seems very capable. Can you wait after the free two months of identifix and upgrade yearly?

  4. A very blazingly sloooow tool compared to snap-on Verus. I've owned a genisys touch since they came out not to long ago and is such a piece of crap no wonder they're going to stop updates for it soon. Time is money and the speed. accuracy, support of the snap=on scan tool products leaves OTC in the dust every time

  5. Eric…., is it ok to leave the key in KOEO position for a good length of time? Will it damage anything when left in that position (except battery drain)?

How does tool directly compare to Autel Maxisys ms906bt?

  6. I thought of getting one myself, but @(almost)$3,000 it is prohibitive and some people are having issues with Android-based OS, as well as poor customer services. I might either wait for another tablet to come out or get Autel's $800 tablet.

Honda's new DST-i (Denso) is @ about $1500, but then they require periodic software subscription purchase, like inkjet printer or shaver cartridges……

    "Globally-sourced" for me means "China"……..

  7. total junk mine has quit twice in 4 months loners are rejects currently waiting 40 days for them to fix mine now loner wont read camereos g-6 Pontiac or dodge darts is up to date last loner would not read fords should have bought autell

  8. hi can you do a review on the autel scan tool I want to know your opinion on it I do see its pretty affordable at $839.99 thank you love the channel Eric

  9. have you had a chance to review the new model evolve ? i was at the sema/aapex show and i suppose you are reviewing their tools. in any case , i saw the tool and i just hope it is at a professional level in terms of doings lot of things such as bidirectional test, evap tests, programming new keys, etc. i was also wondering if you review other scan tools such as autoland scientech. keep up the good work .

  10. Eric – for managing software updates and data storage on home computers  (for the many vehicle profiles and history files) is the Encore  Windows 10 compatible?
