I’ve been asked about a power steering rack video for some time and the opportunity finally presented itself the other week. This one ended up being kind of long so I split it up into 2 parts but I will be posting the full video after I get the second part up for those of you that can watch it all the way through.

have you done any videos on steering boxes that are powered?
That high pressure line looks very rusty. I see that this video was uploaded in 2011. Is that line still ok after 4 years later?
I'm saying this because my 2004 Highlander's low pressure return line was rusted and ruptured earlier this year. I did not know there was leak until I was in the middle of no where. Luckily there was enough fluid left in the system to let me drive to nearest auto part shop to buy some ATF to fill. Reservoir was empty and power steering pump was whining, but power steering still worked. (I'm sure it was bad for power steering pump as I saw metal flakes in oil when I drained power steering lines).
I replaced both low and high pressure line to be safe. There still are small lines on steering rack and are little rusty. Hope they are ok.
Hey Eric first I wanted to say thank you for the videos you have posted is really helpful , and also I have a question I am replacing the rack and pinion on 2000 pathfinder the car has been in an accident before and there was some damage to the front end , and when they fix it at the body shop , they left the steering wheel crooked , but the car runs straight , should I still fix the steering wheel on straight position before starting , or can I set that up when I am ready to install the new one in I will appreciate your help on this thank you Erick . Eric I enjoyed the videos and now have a better understanding of the Rack and Pinion system. I was considering doing this myself but may have local mechanic do this on my Toyota Sequoia SR5 2001 which has had a recent new frame replaced due to a recall. My quote was that the rack and the pressure hoses are rust out and leaking . I am lucky that the whole rack is fully accessible on the outside of the new frame and the steering wheel nut is easily accessible as well. My question is the parts for the pressure hose on the Dealer site is for the entire hose assembly and the car part websites only show a small section of the hose. I am thinking that i should just buy the entire hose kit instead of chancing a incomplete kit .
i bet when you work..at the dealer shop rack and pinions ..are one of those jobs you hate doing…like omg..not a rack again…damn it…
Hey bro. Im a certified auto technician. I working on a 97 toyota tercel. Im replacing the rack. Everything is out. I just gotta get the bolt from the sliding yolk. Right above the rack there is a cover. Covering the steering column. I can see the bolt from inside the car under the dash. But idk if im suppose to get it from the inside or under the car. From inside the car i cant get to it at all. From the bottom idk if im supposed to take that cover off or not.

Lillie1986, are you lost? Obviously your 30 year old Porsche has no rust, how many porsches do you see with rust? None, because who owns a Porsche without meticulously taking care of it inside and out, they're driven about 1:8th of the time REGULAR cars are driven. Regular being civics and corollas. Quit looking at the makes, and instead how the makes are looked after, not because Japanese steel is somehow more rust prone, they're given the chance to rust by actually being driven all the time.
i have a 1994 honda civic dx and both my bellows both are torn but i dont see no leaks and my power steering fluid seem to be fine it been like that since i brought the car.. would you recommend replacing the steering rack?
I don't have alignment issues per say, but what I do have is a wheel that turns itself while driving. It'll pull to the right so you have to hold it straight, kind of like an alignment problem I suppose. I thought it might have been suspension, but a nice youtube person suggested steering rack, which makes more sense. Certain bumps will turn the wheel excessively. What do you guys think?

Wells after you do the rack, make sure to vacuumed out the air, my using a vacuum guns. Air will make noise on psp
hey Eric ,just replaced my rack and pinion in a 2000 ford ranger xlt and when i got it all together and filled up the fluid and stuff went in started the truck and the steering wheel took off side to side by itself and the pump had a whine that it didnt have before.idk what could be making it do that.defective rack? .lines put on backwards?.any advice? thanks
Hello Erick, I have a grand prix 04 its making very bad cranking noises when a turn, I just replace the tie end rod outer and inner. what do you think is the problem??? Thank you for your help man.
Hey, my steering wheel is really hard to turn at idle after one full turn of the wheel unless i rev it. The power steering pump isn't leaking and it isn't squealing. Does that sound like a rack?
@Lillie1986 every car on the face of the earth, your car/bicycle, my car, batmans car, metal is metal, it ALL will rust or oxidize or corrode in some type of way, it doesn't matter if it says Honda, Toyota, Chevy, or Ferrari on it. Could be a year old and already have rust on it. Nothing you can ever buy, short of making every component on your car out of stainless steel will change that. Common Sense.

@lamilicia Normally you see leaks particularly around the area of the bellows. Sometimes like on this truck however you will have a loss of power steering.

@EricTheCarGuy Thanks Eric . I ended up buying the whole inner tie rod with the bushing already installed .
@13FravelJ Normally by disconnecting the return line and running it into a container as you run the engine, once it's empty replace the line and refill.

Hey Eric, How do you change your power steering fluid?
Hey Eric I just bought a inner tie rod bushing kit for my 1996 grand am 3.1L 3100 and the bushing fits driver side and not passenger side. Would you know what vehicle would have a smaller bushing ? Auto parts stores will only look up make and model and year . I'm stumped . I might just have to buy a whole tie rod . Someone switched it before I got the car .Thanks I love your videos . Very educational . I have learned a lot from them .
@MrDJskillage I honestly don't know the answer to that as it's never come up. Try google it often works for me.
