What Happens When You Put Diesel in Gasoline?

I read an article recently about a fueling station in California that had accidentally put diesel into their gasoline tanks. Several vehicle owners had to have their vehicles repaired as a result of this mix up.

In this video I talk about what happens to your engine and fuel system when you put diesel where gas should go. I also talk about what happens when you put gasoline in your Diesel engine.

If you’re curious about this topic, watch the video and find out what happens.

  1. I have put by mistake a bit of Ediesel in my petrol engine car and I’ve stopped when I realised and put Epower after what shall Idi please?

  2. I accidentally dumped about 5 liters of diesel into my gasoline car… realizing my mistake I stopped, topped it to the brim with gasoline and hoped nothing would happen. The ratio I think was about 10 to 20%. The car acted sluggish until it warmed up, then it ran fine. I presume that as the engine warmed up, fuel became less viscous and also higher temperatures in the combustion chamber made the scattered diesel mollecules ignite after the gasoline was ignited by the spark. After that tank was empty I put in a tank of 100 octane along with fuel system cleaner additive. Engine ran and runs fine after that. Z16XER engine. Even made it through Emissions with no problem, lol. But I don't think it was particularly healthy for the cat converter.

  3. last night it was bitterly cold, and I think I accidently put diesel fuel in my old 2006 PT Cruiser.
Because I thought Why the heck isn't this gas nozzle going all the way in, like other gas nozzles. So I just let the nozzle go in the partial way it did and filled the car with 30L of gas, since it was the strong winds were so cold my hands were freezing.

I thought for sure I picked the cheapest gas selection of the three, like I have always done to fill up.
But after I left I didn't make it home, the car putted out, knocking as I tried to start it again, and hope to make it home, since it was so bitterly cold out. And I and my dog wasn't prepared for such a temp drop, since the day before it was warmer.

But had to get the car towed, and when the gal at the place heard my story, she first asked me if I put diesel in my car instead of gas.

I just lost my husband to a massive heart attack in January, been with him 43, going on 44 years, since I was 16. So I know I'm finding myself doing things in my grief a little absently minded

But Gosh I honestly Don't remember a bright green handle !!! And showing me I was reaching for diesel , it felt like the universal way I have always got gas, by picking the 3rd selection on the reg gas and beginning the pumping.

Gosh how much is this going to cost me to get my car back

  4. One other thing to consider, diesel has a very low octane rating. In older engines the fuel system could not atomize the diesel to burn it efficiently in the cylinder. Now GDI engines with higher pressures could and may suffer from pre-ignition or possibly detonation.

  5. We normally put a small amount of premium gas into our older tractors keeps it thawed at a cheaper price obviously not a 50:50 like a cup of gas for 34 gallons of diesel.

  6. I love your channel! What I'm about to say won't be popular, though… I've had good experience running a small amount of diesel in several gas engines (1 cup diesel per 15-20 gallons of gas) for a few different purposes As you mentioned, diesel IS harder to ignite (but also contains more energy than gas). For cars with preignition issues, a small amount of diesel essentially raises the octane levels, preventing preignition and knock. Exactly what 'premium' fuel is designed to do, be slightly harder to ignite for high compression, forced air induction, heavily tuned, and poor running engines that tend to 'ping', etc. One of my car's that I used this in was a highly tuned Corvette that needed a slight octane boost beyond 'Premium'. Looking at the engine computer data, it's clear the diesel allowed for more timing. Obviously, too much diesel will be too hard to ignite for proper combustion, so not too much! In addition to preventing preignition in gas engines, a minute amount of diesel also contains more energy to ram those pistons down for a longer duration of time than just the initial explosion. That slightly stronger explosion equates to more torque. One of the reasons diesels are inherently torquey. Another benefit (again, very slight due to low ratio) is that diesel is a lubricant and cleaner. It is effective in cleaning injectors and lubricating upper cylinder areas, intake valves, etc. (with right ratio). Much like Lucas oil fuel additive, but with added benefit of actually being a combustible fuel, not just an additive with minimal results (Lucas oil👀). Not trying to start a debate, just thought I'd share a bit from my experience. 😉

  7. Eric…Im Eric too and have dealt with diesel in my fuel. Such as 50/50 ratio in an asperated v8 motor. I put over 2000 miles on the 302cc motor before it went clunk. The ratio was wrong. But, when adding diesel to the fuel…..it increases mileage. It increases strength of the motor. So much it created too much pressure and busted off the dog ears on cylinders 2 and 6. To cause the pistons to turn sideways. The others kept going till I got home 63 miles later. I found that…with the compression raised by detonation the fuel mix was too high. The timing could have been adjusted. My question and it will not be answered on any searcher….is….how much diesel is needed to create higher octane fuel. Then seeking information on what octane boosters are made of. Well….a hidden secret by all fuel companies….is if you use the recommended fuel ratio on a common fuel octane booster with diesel you will find the same results. Then if you inspect the making of what octane booster is and you see other like fuels you will find they are about the same as diesel. So, if you get a container and it says…..add this to 10 gallons and it makes 108….just add the same amount of diesel. Compare. Nitro fuel that runs RC motors does not need but a glow plug to get it started. Once its started the inertia keeps it going once the glow plug is disconnected. Think!!!! Why can not you find the ratio to increase octane on the local Search? THINK why does my 1973 Bultaco Matador 250cc motor bike showing 15.5 horse power motor gets …….. 125mpg and you will not find those in society ever? Why did the fuel company pay the company to discontinue the sales in USA as well as VW bugs and Datsuns rehabbed Mercedes motors getting 40mpg? And why is it that my 302 with 351 heads and a 283 grind with a 2bbl motorcraft and timing tuned, got 32 mpg on a V8???? And why Biden Laden made it president. It is all about money. Honesty or dishonesty. Drug war is over because PRez Obummer joined with the medical insurance and drug companies to create more demand and sales of all the illegal drugs made legal…… Pay attention people. Eric the car guy is right to an extent. Im 57yo and have done a lot of testing in my life. Such as C3 is easier to make then C4 and safer. 9 parts vasoline and 1 part of potassium chlorate and a detonator. Dont do the vaccines or flu shots…they democrats want to keep you dumb. Where does autisum come from????? HELLOOOOOOOOO is anyone out there???

  8. What happens if a little bit of gas diesel in a suv and put regular gas to flush it out and don't work can a cleaner help to get rid of the diesel gas out of the exhaust???

  9. i have a bunch of leftover diesel from one of my trucks and i have been mixing it in 1/3 to a gallon and running it in my generator in my off grid property for a wile now i have noticed no difference in performance and the generator is a little bit quieter on the mix no smoke or anything, exhaust smells different i think at worst in my situation it might foul the plug after a wile but that is easily rectified =)

  10. Had that incident in Ottawa, Canada where the delivery driver put diesel in the regular gad holding tanks…quite a few cars got damaged in the process..

  11. Thanks Eric im kinda having the same problem.. Customer accidentally filled his car with diesel and i can say it really caused damage.. Until now i haven't fix it yet..

  12. Engine will run just smoke a lot you keep putting gas in and it cleans up. Did it in a durango magnum 5.2 no issues after it burned out the diesel.

  13. I've actually accidently put it in my Camaro before. It smoked for a while, used a little more oil. but it did run. I just drove it all out then put more gas in. It didn't hurt it. your crazy!!!
