Many of the friends I grew up with turned out like Denise.
My state offers incredibly liberal welfare benefits that can be claimed as easily as saying you have anxiety at work. This has lead to a culture where people straight out of high school file for benefits so they can keep on living a care free life. This lack of responsibility always takes its toll and the story is the same. Every single one of my friends who did this became horribly depressed. They combat this through destructive behavior like crime and drugs. We have the issue where on the first of each month when benefits are paid crime skyrockets. You can drive around and see lines at abandoned houses where its obvious drugs are being sold.
The normal antidote to this behavior is a caring family who says no more or else. The problem is the state has completely undermined the parents ability to discipline. For example the family of my best friends girlfriend has a daughter who only wants to party and live a care free life collecting government checks. she already has multiple kids by different fathers who are all in jail. Her parents tried to help by demanding she get a job or have to move out knowing she couldnt handle having to save her money for rent. Instead she was able to apply for immediate section 8 housing and will live there until her parents back off the demands.
