Tensioner pulley wear will cause your pulley to squeak. A worn out pulley bearing or a worn spring in the tension pulley can also cause squeaking or a chirp. I show you how to use water to identify what type of squeak problem you have and then how to find the problem. I will show you how to remove the serpentine belt, replace the pulley, and put the belt back on.

  1. Hi, Chris, is it okay to replace the bearing from the tensioner pulley or is it a must to change the whole thing like the video here? 🙂

  2. Theres a little arrow on the top of the tensioner looking from above . Does it need to be centered? I have mine slightly to the right , not sure if it tightens the belt too much and that it’s a bad thing. There’s no noise . Belt feels firm in place . Should it be a little bit lose ? It’s A 09 mustang v6

  3. can you do a video on removing that tensioner on that mustang that's the one i have . there are no other videos on removing the tensioner that looks like that one with the torx screw in the center of the tensioner and the replacement part look nothing like the oem one on my car . please help.

  4. I have to replace the idler pulley adjustment bolt on my nissan and its still not tightening the belt like it should and now I am lost on what to do. Sure wish you had a video for this problem or do you have a link to a video that could help me

  5. i honestly wish i would have watched this video before i took my car to the shop i feel cheated i was charged for an hour for something that takes 30 minutes at the most and im 100% I COULD HAVE DONE IT MY SELF AFTER WATCHING THIS VIDEO

  6. my friend took off the tensioner bolt when trying to replace my alternator but now the bolt won’t screen back on, any suggestions?

  7. My belt is not chirping rhythmically like this but squeaks when driving first 200m, quite loud and then suddenly stops squeaking and the rest of a journey is absolutely fine. It would not be be the tensioner I guess?

  8. Chow, after watching your videos on this topic I was able to determine my tensioner pulley was trashed. I tried to purchase a new one from the dealer but they could only sell me the whole pulley assembly with a much smaller pulley attached. I took option B' and took the old pulley to Napa and they were able to cross check the part number with the last four digits of the VIN and match it up with a new pulley of the same dimensions. This saved me a lot of extra cost and time. The pulley measured 102mm in case anyone needs that info. Thanks again for a huge assist!

  9. I wish somebody could help me magically I need help putting the belt back on. 2011 Kia soul I just changed out the alternator can't get the belt back on

  10. Hi, i recently change the serpentine belt of my honda 2003 1.5L, now when i turn on the AC then all lights flickering, what's the issue?

  11. Hi chris. I have a question about my 08 tundra 5.7 v8. I'm doing the water pump service. All torn down I noticed power steering pulley has tiny tiny in/out movement. I've read in forums that this is normal in tundra. I'm not to sure about that. If it's not normal can I just replace pulley or is it a replace all type of thing..pulley and pump come together??? Thanks chris..I ask because since I tore it all down may as well change it if it needs it..

  12. So when you used the belt tension bar are you just pushing the pulley down or starting to loosen the bolt on the pulley?

  13. You forgot to mention the part where you have to push the tensioner all the way down to its maximum tension or “radius” so that when you’re tightening the new one on, you’re not just going up and down against tension and you’re actually tightening it so that the pulley doesn’t fly off when you’re going 60 mph on the freeway👍🏼

  14. Your videos are the best man!!…Extremely helpful and very acurate. Always right to the point…. with clear presentations!!
Thanks for taking the time to teach my friend!!

  15. I changed mines along with belt.i have a 00 accord v6, well i didnt just take off the bearing part i took off whole piece. It started fine no more squeak but after i started it 30min later noise came back. Any idea?

  16. Yo folks working on their cars. Let me tell all of you something. I'm just learning mechanical on my car and everything they (the professionals) really do not add up to new schools part. I'm about to sell my 1995 GMC VANDURA 5.7L ENGINE here in Dayton, OH because I cannot find one measly video on YouTube or any other Internet how to take off an awkward EGR valve. Ridiculous right [I mean for getting rid of it.]?
This is not what I'm beefing about?
I mad cause all these so-called professionals does not show you how to place rachet on a Delco 32627 tensioner for which does not really have no open secured catch to it!!! Guess what I used GENIUS? VICE GRIPS! The perfect tool.

  17. I had severe noise. Both pulleys do not seem to wobble, according to me. Now my belt will not remain on the pulleys. Tension pulley or idle pulley?

  18. So I've been told I need to replace the whole tensioner pulley. How does one know whether to do this or just replace the wheel as in the video. My belt squeals but it also rides up on the rim of the pulley wheel causing it to shred or come off.

  19. thanks man, just watched all your videos how to change the idler bearing,& v belt , do you have a video telling how to find compatible v belt or belt tensioner, since i want to use cheaper parts. thank you

  20. HOW DO YOU RELEASE THE TENSION???

Loosening the pulley bolt doesn't work, all that does is eventually take the pulley off. Is there a separate "hex" hole that I need to loosen? I'm not seeing anything else to loosen

  21. Wow! You do an excellent job on instructional videos! I just watched this one and the other about the engine squeak and completely understand everything you said! With the right tools, I feel I can go fix the squeak myself, although not sure I could get the belt off by myself. I am probably two to 3 times your age, female and my hands hands have quite a bit of arthritis in them these days but I have done a lot of things under my own hood. Thanks a lot for making such a great easy to understand video that even a gramma like me can use!
