Do fuel system cleaners actually work? Testing Gumout “All-in-One”

This is the first test in a series of fuel cleaner test I will be performing to see how fuel cleaners work and if they actually work. In this video I tested Gumout “All in one” fuel system cleaner. I use a mini borescope camera to look into the engine and see how dirty the engine is before the fuel treatment and then after the fuel treatment.
I followed the instructions on the container and Gumout fuel cleaner did a great job cleaning the shiny, sludge buildup, but did not work as well as I would have thought on the clumps of hard carbon buildup. It did not clean the cylinders as much as I thought it would since they do say one bottle will clean the engine.

  1. Hey, Chris. I've been using PB Blaster to remove carbon buildup on pistons. First you need a warm engine. Put your gloves on and remove the spark plugs. Then use the straw on the can inside of a drinking straw with a long tape tab on the top to prevent you losing it inside the cylinder. Then you spray each cylinder for about 5 to 8 seconds. Wait 30 to 45 minutes. Then you crank it after a few times, and let it run for 30 minutes. You should see white smoke out of your exhaust pipe. Try this. And use your boroscope to check the results.

  2. The fact that cylinders #2, 5 and 6 have more carbon deposits and less likely to be removed, is that not all of their corresponding fuel injectors were clogged equally and thus the worse fuel spray the more incomplete fuel burning and consequently more deposits. To be fair, this test should be done after all injectors were thoroughly cleaned for equal distribution of the additive in the tank. Personally, I think the brand of cleaners may not be important.

  3. The product that I use to clean & protect my engine = Shell V-Power!! I have used this gasoline in each of the 4 vehicles that I have owned over the past 15 years, even though none of those vehicles required premium gas. The engines in each of them ran like a charm the entire time I owned each of those vehicles. And never once did I ever experience any hesitation upon acceleration.
    I swear by Shell's V-Power cleaning additives! Huge bonus = no ethanol content (i.e. watered down gas)!

  4. Not sure how it would work? Oil gets dirty from burning gasoline, filter cleans out grit as best as possible. Just replace oil and filter every 3000 kms. No other option.

  6. I think it would work well if you used it consistently every couple thousand miles in a new car to prevent carbon buildup to begin with.

  7. Change your car fluids and Chris has good videos on that…buy gas from so called Top Tier Stations only like Costco and Shell. I think all these other products are snake oil. Blue Devil, radiator stop leak etc etc are a waste of your money. Lucas oil products? Really? Just change your oil, coolant transmission fluid, brake fluid as required and you will not need these wasteful miracle products. It's your money!

  8. I wish someone would recreate this scenario with a couple of brand new small engines & do monthly updates on carbon buildup progression.

    Its OBVIOUS that all these carbon cleaners need to be used early in the motors life to be most effective. Its like anything, you cant wait until the damage is done to try & prevent the damage. Its like wearing a bike helmet after you crash & damage you skull. You may prevent further damage but you cant undo neglect. I would bet though if you started using a Carbon Cleaner on your motor when its brand new or even at your first Oil Change you'd see a huge difference between your motor & a motor that didn't use it from the start.
