Do Head Gasket Sealers Actually Work (FULL 2yr TEST with Engine Teardown)

Replacing a Head Gasket can be difficult and expensive. Sometimes your car is not worth fixing and this is where a head gasket sealer in a bottle comes in handy. Do these head gasket sealers actually work? How long do they last? How do they work? What does a bad head gasket look like? Do head gasket sealers clog radiators?

In this video I show you how to use a head gasket sealer to repair the head gasket and test it for 2yrs and 10,000 miles. I then tear down the engine and show you how the headgasket failed, how the sealer worked, and if the radiator got clogged up with sealer.

  1. So it was brought to my attention that my house phone number is on the oil analysis sheet. I am waiting for YouTube to blur it so in the meantime, please dont call it…

  2. So say like Monday morning I check my oil and there's signs of a head gasket leak. Would it be safe to do minimal driving until I got paid on Friday? (Not happening to me but I feel like that's happened or maybe happening to someone)

  3. Chris, what a fantastic video covering an issue that challenges car owners on a budget. The best car repair/maintenance channel on YouTube. Stay safe, God bless!

  4. K-seal worked fine on an old GM engine I had that was leaking coolant outwards down the front of the block, though the leak was very slow (literally weeping). It sealed it up immediately but after about 500 miles I was still not confident so got a new head gasket set including head bolts for 50 bucks and swapped lot in just a day. Old head gasket clearly showed a nice copper patch where the fix worked.

  5. Since you asked, I tried that K-Seal sealant stuff in our elderly '96 Honda Accord, which probably had a crack or fissure in the head (apparently those models are prone to that). It was "smoking" steam out the exhaust like a destroyer at the Battle of Midway. However, the coolant seemed fine–no "mayo" or bubbling. So, coolant was probably leaking into a combustion chamber, but exhaust gases not getting into the coolant (or much anyhow). With the K-Seal goop added as directed directly to the radiator (after some coolant had been removed turkey baster style), and the run as indicated on the bottle, the leak stopped. The heater still worked, so no chiggers there. In short, it worked just fine for an old beater that didn't warrant a proper repair. That is, until a couple if months later when some idiot kid plowed into it while it was parked in front of our house. Probably the best thing for it, to be honest. Both vehicles were totalled, and I got a nice little full value payoff, more than I'd expected honestly, for something that MIGHT have limped along MAYBE another year or two at best, if I had to guess. So yeah, if you've got a semi-junker with a leaky head not really worth fixing properly, definitely do the modern "sawdust thing" with a sealant like K-Seal. I feel the same about some Lucas "wonder potions" like their transmission fix or power steering fix. They've helped and are still helping me nurse along a couple of Clinton Era Mopars.

  6. Chris can you make one day a video about valve stem seals replacement? When you went for drifting before 2 years your Mustang burnt oil and you said that it is maybe from valve stem seals, but how can it be possible given that if the valve stem seals are bad, there is a blue smoke when you start the car and this does not happen in your car. It is maybe from oil piston ring.

  7. Also, if head gasket is leaking, it can push the pressure from combustion into the coolant reservoir and then it can build pressure untill the cap flies off to heaven
