Huh, I didn't realize that hole is how you are supposed to widen the gap; I've always just pushed it further along the measurement ramp. I've had so many of those spark plug gapping tools like seen in the video, because they are cheap and I always misplace them! 😀

I wouldn’t recommend those disks, though. They’re known to be inaccurate – sometimes almost even by .01. Feeler gauges are much better
Thanks! I am on a 2-week quest to get all the info on everything before replacing mine. Problem is that I cannot get a hold of the gap intended for my car with any certainity and am paranoid to have it different than what the manufacturer intended.

when you check the gap number once you get "resistance " were do you check the number at the edges or the middle of the spark plug side electrode ?

Thank you for this post!! You got RIGHT TO THE POINT!! Watched 4 other "How to change a spark plug" to get a refresher course (it's been 30 years since I did that) and the other 4 merely edited out the gapping part. They actually edited out a lot! SMH
Using one of those round gap adjusters is like shooting yourself in the foot. It is inaccurate … need to use a wire gage. I checked my spark plug with a dependable wire gage for a .044 reading. Then I checked my sparkplug gap on the round one and it indicated .039: in the ball park but not accurate enough.
What if you scrap the tip while using the gap tool can it damage your engine using it?
Would you happen to know the gap size for the spark plugs. I have a 2004 mercedes e500

i have the same gauge as you, and my engine recommends 1.0 to 1.1 inches or .07 to .08 millimeters. Is it me or did they screw up the measurements? Had to search for an hour but I found that the correct gap is .044 inches or 1.1 millimeters. They switched the two terms, and even if you do that the inches is still off by a mile

….. if you bend the ground electrode it will loose the parallelism with the "live" electrode. I just tap it gently and the "live" electrode will slide down
