How to Replace a Clutch in your Car or Truck (Full DIY Guide)

Learn how to replace a clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, throw out bearing (aka release bearing), pilot bearing and rear main seal in this video!

My clutch was fine but my throwout bearing was bad so I decided to show how to replace all of the wear items while the transmission was off. This includes replacing the pilot bearing which the transmission input shaft goes into, the throwout bearing which engages the pressure plate via the clutch fork, the flywheel which I upgraded to an aluminum light weight flywheel, and finally the rear main seal because that is a common wear item which causes oil leaks in higher mileage motors. With the transmission out, it is worth it to replace all of these parts now instead of having to do this all over again. Most clutch kits come with the throwout bearing and pilot bearing so you just need to buy a rear main seal.

  1. After installing the clutch disc should the clutch disc be free to move? Mine is engaged it’s pressed between the flywheel and pressure plate

  2. First of all, thank you for sharing.
I want to ask, what is the problem when the engine is running and the gear cannot be put in.
when the engine is turned off, go into gear and then start the engine while pressing the clutch will the car jump (keep moving)?

    how to overcome?

  3. Omg Chris!!! Noooooo don’t use anti seize on the fork pivot. Use moly lithium lube!!! Anti seize is not a lubricant. After the fluid dries out. It’ll start squeaking very loudly because there’s fine particles of metal against metal. It’s a horrible lubricant!!! Everything else was top notch though.

  4. The link for the Flywheel is no longer working. Can you post a new link or link to a similar flywheel or part #? Thx

  5. I have a broken throw out bearing in my 1942 GPW, ordered these parts for it but not being a mechanic, this video was super helpful! Thanks Chris 🙂

  6. Any idea about this issue on my 2004 Impreza wagon manual, 156,000 miles? Clutch replaced 20,000 miles ago. Center Differential replaced 200 miles ago. Noise started after center diff replacement, about 100 miles later. Does not make noise in turns (except when coasting).

A mild clicking/tapping noise (sounds soft like playing card in bike spoke) is present when coasting in any gear, front main transaxle area (transmission). It varies in frequency and speed, according to the output shaft RPMs, and sometimes it's quieter or not there at all. It's probably a small piece of flat wire from a piece of seal that got away during clutch or center differential replacement. Doesn't seem to affect operations though. Does it about 80% of the time, but is not noticeable 50% of that time. It's quiet enough where talking, dirt roads, road noise, or any stereo masks it. Doesn't make the noise when it's under load…as in forward or reverse gears in play, clutch released.

Any ideas, other than debris in case?

    Thanks!

  7. Did the pressure plate sit against the flywheel or was there a gap. I installed my pressure plate and when I got to torque there was a gap between the pressure plate and flywheel (where the bolts go) it's against the clutch itself just not the flywheel

  8. Hello, is this the fix for when the engine makes a sound when going up and down gears? (when releasing clutch pedal especially) also when I slow down (let go of gas) it does this, makes a constant terrible "knocking" sound until i speed up more, especially when in 1st 2nd or 3rd

  9. Hai Chris, we have problems in India we have the vehicle in water clogged areas for a week every year, we were able to lubricate the release bearing by only dismantling, is there anyway we can lubricate the release bearing without dosmantling

  10. I Love this guys videos… my brother has Been watching his videos since he first started posting. He my brother said something about his mutang then Chris fix bought one coincidence I think not lol 😊❤😊😊😊 does he have a wome in his life what women don't want a man who does mechanics. 11. Just got my bugatti back from the dealer and here is the receipt :

    1 Flyweel
    1 ounce of Grease
    1 fresh bread
Total: u knew this was gonne be expensive

  12. Awesome video, its convinced me that clutch and transmission work is beyond my ability.
I could probably get after a couple tries but 1st few times I'd get lube where your not supposed to, and id scratch the fly wheel and or pressure plate, od have to replace, and resurface alot, id probably mess up the main rear seal and who know what else.

Still great video maybe someday if I have a better im restoring that I don't rely on as my main vehicle I might try this.

  13. Do I have to drain the transmission? My truck is high mileage well kinda 230k but I’ve heard it’s bad to change old transmission fluid

  14. After replacing my flywheel and clutch, my car wouldn't start on my Saturn SC2. I then replaced the battery and starter but it still wouldn't start. I have taken my transmission housing apart again to start over. When I went to remove the flywheel, it did not move on the crankshaft when I removed the bolts (I didn't use anything to try to prevent it from rotating). Could this be why my car isn't starting? How do I check if the crankshaft is stuck? Thanks for any help.
