Google Pixel 5a review: Why does this phone exist? πŸ€”

The Google Pixel 5a is here — and Google’s affordable Pixel for 2021 is just a little bit different compared to last year’s model. It’s got a much bigger screen, a ginormous battery, and important table-stakes features like water resistance that were missing from the 4a.

But a more important question than what the Pixel 5a is — it’s pretty much just an upgraded Pixel 4a 5G, after all — is *why* it exists.

  1. Another review where they failed to talk about the rampant overheating issues with the camera. At first it was only reported while shooting video at 4k 60. But now people all over are saying even while just taking photos it'll overheat! People on Reddit are also saying they can't even use Google Maps for very long without the phone overheating? I ordered this phone and it'll be here today. But after everything I've seen and heard now, I'm sending it straight back for a refund. I need a reliable device. This sounds like they have some serious heating issues to work out. And I use my phone to shoot vlogs and videos for my business. I can't have a phone that can't handle simple video tasks. What a shame. I thought I had found an awesome value here.

  2. Most reviewers always forget that the 5a is missing a laser autofocus sensor (that dot below the two cameras) that came with the 5 and 4a 5g. It's not that important but it'll be interesting to see the difference in photo quality (little but people don't know that the pixel 3 actually takes slightly more detailed photos because the lense had a slight change when the 4 came out)

  3. The Pixel 5a follows the trend originally set by the Pixel 3a – a common-sense smartphone. It has common-sense features – including 5G (new at this end) – without being overly pricey.

  4. Hell. I'm tech savvy and this is just a good back up phone to have. Either way my mom and I switched to Fi. So we got the deal with these phones for $15 a month. Not bad. And I still have my OnePlus 8 for days when I need the extra power. Most days I download podcasts for work and just listen offline. No big usage on normal days.

  5. For someone like me who never owns a Google Pixel phone but at the same time deeply value headphone jack and IP rating, this is definitely a dream come true. Being a Pixel phone, it will definitely be among the first to get the latest Android OS update.

  6. I totally agree. Pixel team seems to have no strategy. Why will they release a new phone when next version of Android is in the corner and why not release it with Android 12
    1. Did Google team hear on issues with Pixel 5 (especially with speaker) and did they address it?
    2. Either release with 5G or don’t why this intermediate state?
    3. Don;t care about 90hz in a mid range phone
    4. Looks like they also reduced support life time. Apple on the other had is increasing support. Makes no sense to me.
I’ve been a Pixel supporter for long time, but I give up. One last chance on Pixel 6. If they mess it up, I’m done.

  7. I dropped everything to replace my galaxy s20 when I heard this was released. Hate that phone beyond belief. Bizarre version of android that I"m always fighting with. It's almost stock, but not. Screen is delaminating less than a year after using it. Camera straight up sucks. So happy I can get some trade in value for the samsung piece of 'ish. First time i've not had a google phone in 15 years, and I regret every moment.

  8. One thing that you guys forgot to mention is that the ultra wide angle camera got a huge upgrade. The pixel 4a 5g and the 5 both have a 107 degree ultra wide angle camera, which received complaints for having a narrow range of view. The pixel 5a supposedly has a 119 degree ultra wide angle camera, which now puts it on par with phones known for their wide ultra wide cameras, like the iphone and s21 (120 degrees).

As someone that likes to take landscape pictures while hiking, the narrow 107 degree camera is one of the main reasons that I DIDN'T buy the pixel 5. I ended up with the s20 ultra, but my girlfriend's iphone 12's camera made me regret that decision. I'm going to return the s20 utlra, and now I'm probably going to get the 5a.
