January update for the Google Pixel Watch fixes issues with 3rd party watch faces

The Google Pixel Watch received its first OTA update in December, but that still left some issues to be fixed. Google has now released the January update for the watch with a gradual rollout that will continue into next week.

The major bug fix with this release concerns third-party watch faces – those used to turn off after 15 minutes, even if you had Always On Display (AOD) mode enabled. This issue was seemingly limited to older watch faces that didn’t use the new Jetpack Watch Face library. Anyway, this should be fixed now.

The update also includes the January 5 security patch. You should watch for firmware version RWD9.220429.073 (and .J1 for Japan and Taiwan).

One change you won’t find in the official change log is that the Fall Detection feature has been hidden. This feature isn’t ready and hasn’t been fully tested yet – showing up in the watch menus was a mistake. Fall Detection should be enabled for real in the coming months.
