Outdated, in the newest version of Google Maps, you can download a selection of an area from either around your house or the entire city . Just go to "Offline areas" then click the "+" button.
This must have been for a OLLLLLLDDDDDDDDDD version of Android. It's a worthless video now. Update it or take it down :/

if there is no near landmarks = in maps search for "Ok Maps" or "okmap", so it saves an offline map without any land marks!
I need offline maps for navigation, you can't as of right now

Is navigation still available offline though?
should still be able to get the save as offline map option when you select the search bar
not so good , can only save about one mile!
Used to work in Slovakia… since the huge update it doesn't… same with searching in restaurants atc. …Google Fail.
It didn't work in some region, like japan.
