Honestly, Democrats did keep the house but really underperformed in 2020.
In 2018, Democrats gained 40 House Seats winning 235 seats. Had democrats done 1% better, Democrats would have gained 47 House Seats and won 242 seats. So democrats were well in spitting distance of breaking the 240 ceiling. Not only that, but Polls underestimated Democrats in 2018. Polls had democrats gaining 36 house seats winning 231 seats. So polls did pretty well.
In 2020, FiveThirtyEight had Democrats winning around 240 seats. But instead only won 222. Democrats lost many districts in very republican areas that democrats weren’t suppose to win in 2018. I think democrats being soooo overexposed in the house following the blue wave. Now looking at how the house went in 2020 really shows how much 2018 may have been an anomaly.
