When rapid mutations take place, and many variants emerge, a virus is at the end of its life cycle. This is called endemic equilibrium. It's not a "possible end of holiday surge." It's the end of SARS-CoV2 until a new strain emerges as SARS-CoV3.

    And stop calling it a "holiday surge." Virus transmission has very little to do with human behavior. The more transmissible variants mean we will have more and more cases, but fewer and fewer hospitalizations, and even fewer deaths. Even if we went about our business the same exact way as before, there would still be a surge. Just because it happened right after Christmas does not mean it was caused by human behavior. Correlation does not mean causation.
