4. "A 1 year war fought 20 times over…" … So, all these Generals, like McMaster, and other extremely knowledgeable, experienced military leaders had 20 times to get it right. And they couldn't do it. McMaster sounds like he's saying 'Look, I know how to do this… just give me one more try…'. The other thing is that it sounds like 'winning' the war in Afghanistan, or 'defeating' the Taliban, to McMaster would mean keeping 8500, or 10,000 American troops there indefinitely. The problem is, unlike Germany, Japan, or South Korea, there just doesn't appear to be much support for that kind of sustained mission in Afghanistan. I think much can be said to support arguments for such a sustained commitment to preventing terrorist threats from finding safe harbor in Afghanistan. However, in regards to US security threats, we have much bigger fish to fry today as opposed to 20, or even 10 years ago. Namely, China and Russia, and meeting those security challenges are going to demand increasingly greater resources.
