  4. Obama commuted and pardoned over 1900 criminals in 8 years. President Trump has done only 44 in 4 years, the least of any POTUS in the last 100 years.

  9. I can summarize what's wrong to me about a president pardoning himself in less words than these educated people used, although I admit they know the law and I don't. If a president can pardon himself, doesn't that give him absolute power? Since when is that a tenet of democracy??

    But they're right that a lot of what we've based our system of government on has been an unspoken understanding that leaders behave normally and somewhat rationally, if not ethically. And at least there is still culpability at the state level.

    Perhaps something good will come out of the Trump administration after all: a re-examination of the loopholes that only an incredibly ignorant, mentally ill, and morally-bereft president would discover and use to his advantage.
