20. Staying at home may be the best thing that has happened for young children! Children need play…this is where children developed creativity, empathy, develope social skills, and and gross and fine motor skills….and more. Young children have around 8 developmental domains, and unfortunately, ever since no child left behind, parents have been sold a bill of goods that if a child can't start reading at 5 years—then start them at 4 years! I believe, from my own experience, and from actually READING my text books in working on a degree in early childhood education, was a very different message from what my professors were teaching from the front of the classroom. My textbooks said just because a child can read at 4 or 5 years doesn't mean they should.

    In my required classroom observations, children cycled through literacy and math…sitting all day doing low grade clerical work with only 15 minutes of outside play. Added to that, homework.

    I was so fortunate, back in the 70's, when my children started school, that they attended a private school that registered children for the first grade at 7 years old, but preferably at 8 years. No homework or testing until 4th grade. We were told before they registered and after they started, "let them play". My 2 daughters and the 5 children (6 girls, 1 boy in what I call the pod of friends) of my 2 close friends, all turned 8 years old in the 1st grade. None knew their letter sounds. Today, in that pod of friends, there are 4 doctors, one masters working on a doctorate, and 1 BS in business.
    For parents who are anxious about their children getting behind, I would recommend googling the Smithsonian's article on the schools in Finland. The background here, is that for the first bi-yearly international testing of the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA– the standard used to determine how we rank compared to other nations), the Fins were at the top. Then China decided that couldn't happen, and started hammering their students with math, science, and literacy. Their students go from school to tutors. The Fins go home and play. They have little homework and little testing, but just for the fun of it..

    If parents know the facts, it will hopefully ease their anxiety–and the anxiety of their young children.
