9. The most likely cause of this pipeline rupture would be corrosion of the pipe wall due to deterioration of the pipe coating and ineffective cathodic protection. It would also be understandable if no one noticed the mercaptan odor due to the minimum amount of mercaptan they inject into transmission line gas and the soil acting as a filter. The NTSB investigation will most likely come up with poor maintenance and a lack of inspections with a Smart Pig ( instrument injected into a pipeline, used for evaluating pipeline integrity) in recent years. The NTSB's final report usually takes about a year or two on an incident like this one.
