  3. We need a constitutional ammendment to guarantee separation of church and state: Congress shall make no law granting special rights and privileges to religion or to any other belief not based on evidence.

    Religion is just a belief, like believing in astrology, scientology, alien abductions or reincarnation. Like other evidence-free beliefs, religion is not a good basis for thinking about abortion laws or any other serious topic.

  33. It's really a fascinating move from a political and historical context. Wars have been fought over excommunication. The Church of England was formed due to a rift between the Vatican and the Archbishop of Canterbury on excommunication.

    Given all the problems the Chruch has had, particularly with regard to abuse and protecting abusers, and now this rift over the politicization of abortion in the United States, perhaps it's time for the Catholic convention of bishops of the United States to form a new denomination that doesn't recognize the church leadership in Rome? I would suggest that the pope and and the Vatican clean house — stop covering for clergy (around the world) who have been molesting children. And the Catholic Church?
