Ever since Columbine lawmakers have believed that school shootings should be addressed by passing restrictive gun laws. The shootings at Uvalde are no different. Gun control laws, where enacted, have proved to be ineffective. For some reason physical security solutions are never tried. In other words, measures that deny shooters from entry into schools have mostly been ignored, or have only been adopted halfway. The role of the Feds should be to develop uniform physical security standards for schools, and then require adaptation as a precondition for future Federal funding.

It's not 'gun reform'… It's disarmament. Then the police who leave your children inside a room with a maniac mass murderer for over an hour and a half will be the only ones allowed to have the Right to self preservation and self defense. NOT IN AMERICA! NOT ON OUR WATCH! Don't tread on us.
I don't even think we need to focus on gun bans at the moment although I am for heavier restrictions like bans. We need to fundamentally change the culture around guns and owning them first. Personally we need to treat guns like owning a car. Before you get to take your gun home you need to pass a background check, you need to pass a gun safety test, you need to pass a test quizzing you on federal/state/local ordinances, you would also need to pass a practical proficiency test where you prove you know how to load, check, clean and aim/fire your gun and lastly you will need to show proof you have the ability to lock your gun away safely. Every gun personally built or sold should be cataloged to a specific owner in a centralized database and even gifting a firearm should require parties to submit that transfer and contract form to authorities for tracking.
Every-time you buy a gun you should have to pass a background every-time and pass a practical proficiency test for that model of gun. We should also mandate that owners have to recertify their permit every 4 or 6 years; should you fail this re-certification like 3 times during that renewal period they need to turn their guns in to authorities until they do pass it. I want to preempt that this will just make it harder for poor people to get a gun; miss me with that crap. A ""cheap"" gun cost on average like $250 to $450, if a poor person can't shell out another $75 dollars to go through this proctored permit process then they should rethink their needs at that point.

Criminals don't follow the law. That's kind of why they're criminals. The only people restricted by gun laws are law abiding citizens who are then left at the mercy of criminals (for possibly up to an hour) until law enforcement decides to intervene.
