Why does any industrial corporation (steel, plastics, autos, private power plants, etc) use energy? – to make products? No – to make money. At least bitcoin doesn't leave a heap of garbage in front of your house, like most products, and the lady at the intro is wrong – bitcoin is not fake money, the US dollar is.

To put it in perspective, Bitcoin mining emits ~60 million tons of CO2 annually… the current financial ecosystem that has disenfranchised millions of people around the world, that NBC so clearly wants to protect, emits ~1,300 million tons annually.
This isn’t considering the fact that 1.5 billion people globally are still unbanked. How should we go about including them in the financial system? Well for one, the legacy system doesn’t think these people even deserve financial inclusion, while Bitcoin on the other hand is an open system that provides anyone in the world a chance to participate in the global economy. Bitcoin would also be much less of an environmental burden than the legacy system… so you decide.
Only someone who doesn’t know the facts, is narrow minded, or has an affinity for the banking system would say Bitcoin is bad for the environment.
Not only will Bitcoin reduce global emissions by reducing our dependency on the legacy banking system, it’s giving people a natural incentive to invest in renewable energy. Bitcoin mining uses about 40% renewable energy, while the rest of the economy uses ~12%
I care deeply about the environment, and I truly believe Bitcoin will be the best thing to happen to the environment.
Bitcoin is no more fake than is the dollar bill. At least bitcoin can help in deflation rather than hyperinflation.
