10. The impeachment trial was not an act of political vengeance . It was bringing a man responsible for lawlessness and violence to justice. The people of the United States of America expected some act of trial and punishment to give them a sense that justice should happen. Congress according to trumps lawyers would have to make a new amendment to the U.S. Constitution that spells word for word the exacting behavior of a U.S. President that breaks his oath of office with excessive lying, damaging our strength as a nation at home and abroad damaging our foreign policy due to his own limited perceptions and lack of knowledgeable advisors, and destroying our fragile sense of unity. Our biggest and most expected failure of our quest for justice and closure were the majority of the republicans in congress. Our most recent past president was a failure to his oath of office and so to were the members to tried to stop the certification of the states votes. This has happened before in recent elections. The difference was that congress in spite of the divisions between members managed to settle it . Let me say something about how inspiring a president can be. My grandparents and my parents generation were inspired by FDR . He was an inspiring president when he spoke. He was from a privileged background. His wife too. But his agenda thought of everyone. Through the long dark years of the Great Depression and the Second World War we were stronger as a people because he reenforced the idea that we needed each other to survive. That the world needed us to win in Europe and later in the Pacific. Isolationism was not the answer then and it isn’t now. When I was growing up in the 1950’s President Eisenhower kept us at peace except in South Korea for two years. A war that’s never had a peace declared. By the time JFK came along in the 1960’s I was old enough to notice politics. I listened to the campaign speeches of both JFK and Nixon. I could tell who was inspiring and who wasn’t . I watched the 1961 inauguration. I never forgot his great speech or that I actually saw a great American poet Robert Frost recite in the bitter cold of that winter day. Our involvement in war started up again. We still had the Cold War to contend with when it showed up in Cuba. I supported the embargo but not the Bay of Pigs. I felt Cuba fell under the Monroe Doctrine and I felt we should have done a proper invasion. But that was just me and I was in 8th grade. President Johnson who came later made some good domestic policy speeches. He couldn’t get us out of a unpopular war. After him was a long dry emptiness. No inspiring leaders. President Reagan tried. He was a humorous speaker but as a republican I never felt that he was for all of us all the time. Without an inspirational leader after the 1960’s we saw the growth of civil unrest . Racial violence grew. As did rioting in the cities. I remember during the summer of 1969 the news broadcast were bad. So many were dying in Vietnam and then at home they would show cities being looted and set on fire. No matter who was elected they weren’t an inspiration to the country. The Lakota Indians decided to reoccupy the Wounded Knee area. That was a stand off on the federal level. This wasn’t a cowboy movie and it was a long time before it ended. When JFK was president he used troops to enforce the new civil rights law that had passed when Alabama’s governor defied the federal government on equal access to education. I don’t remember a president since that used troops constructively. It made everyone who wasn’t white think they had a chance. Our most recent past president has tried to weaken as many areas as he could to prevent everyone from having that equal chance. Of course he not alone. He’s been an inspiration to the more than seventy million people who voted for him. But it’s been his decisive rhetoric that encouraged bad behavior toward women in any setting. His ridicule of anyone at anytime. His disparagement of people in other countries and other religions. He was a rude and crude bully for his whole term and he still is today. He’s a great actor. He’s been a chameleon to whatever group he appears in front of. He is someone worth writing home about as the saying goes. Because he’s that dangerous to the psychic of the American people. It won’t be history that judges him. It’s all of us struggling to stay alive today in the face of huge problems. It’s us he hurt with his inept leadership and complete lack of caring. You don’t have to believe me. The words are from his own mouth. He lied and promised a medical plan to replace Obama Care. There was never a plan. The republicans were ALWAYS against it. The republicans as a group cant bring themselves to care equally about everyone. Their friends in big business were against it. Our former president soon realized how easy his personality fit into being a republican. They did a lot of the things he said and did but with more polish. We the people will decide ourselves whether he is guilty or innocent . We will remember the congress’s efforts. Their weakness in letting that towering demagogue loose on our country again. Why vote for the same uselessness again. I am sorry we lost John mcCain. I remembered him from when he got off the plane here at Hickman and kissed the ground all those years ago. He could have made such a difference in these last two months when the republicans needed a great example of leadership. Remember in the last few months men have quit the Republican Party. Several have died. And some are so disappointed they have retired from office. Your numbers are slowly unbalancing. Only a few of you can still be perceived to still have ethics.
