Thinking from a logical standpoint as someone who has been in nato excercies before I think Russia will play a political game before a war game. 28 countries preside in nato and many of those countries have powerful military force. Obviously russia vs Ukraine is a slaughter but Russia vs 28 countries. Not as easy. They will play politics to gain the trust of Ukraine long before invasion.

Putin has already won. Remember, his intention all along is to get the US and the EU to treat him and Russia with more respect and to discuss the matter of Russia's security against NATO. He has achieved both objectives, so far… and more… Just with this move, he has shown the fracture lines among NATO nations and their not-so willingness to defend their ally and interest (if not potential member). It also has shown the seriousness of Germany's energy dependency on Russia and the length some German politicians and military leaders would go to protect such energy line.
To Putin, Ukraine is not the real objective, but only an excuse to get on the world stage and being taken seriously… those are his the ultimate goals. What will come may not the endgame for Putin, but might as well be for NATO and the US… because they have been being played like a fool with their set objective as the defenders of Ukraine's territory and sovereignty.
The US, EU, Russia, and Ukraine included, should get together and look into the possibility of creating a "Neutral Ukraine " – another Switzerland or Austria!
Then; if successful ; there should be some form of "national reconciliation " effort. To "include all and exclude none!"
What other options are there for a peaceful resolution? We cannot let this mess fester! Too many people have died!
This mess can get infinitesimally worse! If there's a miscalculation that leads to a nuclear catastrophe.
What would this mean?
It'll mean that in minutes, hundreds of millions of people will die!
It'll mean that in minutes, whole cities will be erased from existence!
It'll mean that our soils and water supplies will be poisoned by fall-out.
It means that the good earth's flora and fauna will be permanently damaged or killed off and so,so much more.
No protection for our own border.

another day where our dept of "defense" is operating thousands of miles away from our border. lol. wouldn't even be a thing if we just stop the NATO expansion, how else are they going to react if we're constantly installing pro-us govt circling Russia? our lesson from the cuba missile crisis is that we should set up military bases and arms surrounding every country on the planet. lol. who cares about de-escalation.
