I Bought a Manufacturer Buyback Tesla at a Steep Discount because the Tesla Dealer couldn’t fix it. It spent over 50 days at the dealer, and was presented 7 times over, with 9 parts thrown at it and it still is broken! Here’s why buying a Lemon Law Car is a bit of a gamble, but one that is tough to lose!

  1. My dad bought a Lemon Law, tahoe years ago. Customer complaint was that the car would not start from time to time. GM replaced the entire engine harness twice, along with starters and ECUs. Dad bought it from a dealer who specializes in selling lemon GMs out of indiana. GM had said it was fixed, though title branded but they gave a very nice bumper to bumper warrenty with it. Fast forward a few months it started having the same issue again. He was getting ready to take it to dealership to get it looked at again, and I happened to notice that the car alarm would keep going off even though you unlocked it but only when you used the key and not the fob. From years of installing car audio, I took a peek under the dash, turns out the original dealership put in one of those dealer installed codealarm upsell car alarms that just happend to have a starter disable circuit. I unplugged it from the harness and sure enough he owned that car for 10 more years not a single issue again. The alarm module had failed. I guess no one thought to look as that alarm used the factory remotes as it was tied into if the car was unlocked by them.

  2. I had to bring my car into the dealership 10 times .. never fixed it .. it didn't get off the lot before it broke down again .. I wish I knew about the lemon law I would have tried to get my money back

  3. The moment I saw him bring out the RCM I had the feeling it's going to need coding to the car. I thought this would have been signed that he may have known already considering how many cars that he's basically got his hands on and fixed. That's a lot of circuitry and a lot of newer cars. When they have some sort of module, it must be coded to that specific car because the previous one is coded to another car.

  4. I consider myself very good with vehicle electronics and mechanics but I still wouldn't take the risk because of the car's lemon title alone. You were extremely lucky the repairs were still honored by warranty. I would've thought Tesla entered that car's vin into a database that marked it as a case settlement, severing all responsibilities of Tesla.

  5. Whilst it’s a good service you get, when I had a model 3, I just spent most of my weekends driving it back and forth to the garage that was an hours drive away to fix silly issues that are a result of cheap parts.

  6. Make sure the tire has the T in the part number. for instance, the pirelli zero as tire that matches the model X is less at discount tire, BUT, the tires are NOT the same part number, weigh 5 pounds less each (I got the specs right from Pirelli), and have different sidewall strengh, resistance/range, and noise characteristics! for me, I'll spend a little bit more for the T (Tesla) version of the tire spec'd by Tesla engineers for a plaid. If you're driving a 3 or y with base specs, def save your money and get the cheaper version.
