I just watched a CBS News video about this incident. They showed a picture of the helicopter pilot, who was quite an old man. It is possible, because his old age, that he had to ageing connected health problems, night time eyesight problems included. He wasn´t perhaps the best possible pilot choice to commonly challenging helicopter night flight conditions because his old age. NBC News video then told that he was "a very experienced pilot and an US Army Vietnam veteran". Old pilots are usually "very experienced", if they started to fly when they were young, but they are not any more healthy young men or women in good physical condition and it can be a problem and a risk, especially if conditions are challenging, like for example flying in night time darkness.
They should have use the car instead.
