Japan embraces Naomi Osaka, a biracial heroine



Naomi Osaka is hogging the headlines for all the right reasons in her native land after she became the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title in the US Open on Sept 9. She’s also helping break new ground in Japan due to her multiracial identity: the daughter of a Haitian father and Japanese mother. Her win has opened up a debate over multiracialism in Japan.

  1. I thought the Japanese flag was the image of the raising sun on a white background. So Naomi Osaka identifies as Malaysian, under the flag presented. For a moment I thought I'd haffto repeat 4 grade social studies.. She did look a little dark for to be full blooded Japanese but they/media keep insisting she is.
