Open up the valley/ intake on a 53 Merc. Flathead in shop class in 1961 high school and found a shop rag laying in the valley very oil soaked. The engine had last been serviced many years before I guess and the rag had not caused a problem. Did a valley cleaning and away it went.

ooops!!! I did it once on a 3.7 Jeep Liberty!! Run crap too ages pulling it all out around the Valves with long nose pliers etc! Amazing how the paper sticks to the Valve seats once squashed! All was well in the end though!!

Back in high school a million years ago a guy in our auto shop class left shop rags in the valley on a 440 after a intake swap. The car ran fine but the oil pressure went to zero when the shredded rag finally clogged up the oil pickup screen.
Wife unit most have not paid attention to him today and now he is lost.

Bought a Ranger once that the new engine blew after a few miles the owner gave up on it so when I pulled the engine and oil pan off I found two red shop rags in the oil pan
The weirdest thing I ever come across was a 5/8 wrench left in the valley of a small block V8 336. It was our bored out race engine. The engine got sold to a smaller team when the local track was trying to get a woman’s class going . Seems the mechanic on that team somehow left the wrench in there before dropping the intake on. It ran a couple races before anyone noticed the strange noise it was making. It can’t go anywhere but the surprise was it didn’t somehow get tangled and bending push rods.
It's not the first time he's left towels in there on camera, then miraculously, nothing happens.
We all have off days.
