29. When I was young, learning about the Second World War and Hitler, I always wondered: how could they have let it happen? Now I realize it’s a gradual process — a slow erosion of decency, where evil becomes normalized one compromise at a time. And then, one day, you wake up living in a totalitarian state. I don’t envy Mark Rutte, trying to keep his composure in the face of so much stupidity. Europe remains deeply tied to and dependent on the United States in countless ways, and the global political stage is complex beyond measure. And yet — how long can we keep justifying our dealings with a man like Trump? There is still immense love and respect for the American people here in Europe, but also a growing recognition that the country’s democracy is dying before our eyes. Trump is the sum of everything that’s wrong with America — greed, ignorance, narcissism, and the cult of power disguised as freedom. The path the country has chosen seems to lead inevitably toward violence. A once unthinkable civil war suddenly doesn’t seem so unthinkable anymore. I truly hope America can find itself again — but I’m not optimistic.
