40 Pounds To PERFECTION

Yep, it’s just 40 pounds to perfection; give or take a month or two. Our cattle grain finishing experiment continues, and today Hilarie and I have to pick up our pork at the butcher. This gives us plenty of meat in storage to last through the winter selling season. On the way to the butcher, I show some of the farms and fields in our area, and talk about what is grown and raised. I visit with the cattle and piglets, and check on Brownie the sow’s pregnancy.

Note:
-We do not offer farm tours or accept visitors
-We do not sell from the farm
-We do not ship our farm’s products
-We do not sell live animals

  1. I just turned 28 and I actually completely agree with you "old fart opinion".
Like, don't get me wrong, I love that I was born in the 90's and I wouldn't change that for anything, but I do hate how samey everything is starting to look now. Go to any suburbs and all the houses look the exact same and boring. Modern interior design is all the same grey and white ugly color scheme. It's all just boring.
I think that's partially the reason I've been so attracted to things like camping, travel, van life, and farming stuff. It's completely different than what you'd normally see.

  2. Pete, hey man. Did you ever come to a conclusion on your experiment finishing these heifers on corn? I'm interested to know what you learned. I looked through the comments but didn't seem to find an answer. I'm assuming they went to butcher by now, if that's where they were headed in the first place. Did you do this to your steers as well? TIA! (maybe there's a follow up video and I haven't seen it)

  3. Once, farming could absorb a basically unlimited amount of people willing to work heavy outdoors labor for a living. Not anymore, though, automation and mechanization have closed that door firmly behind them. Even in the last 10 year here on the South Plains of Texas, new cotton strippers that produce wrapped round bales have eliminated three entire season jobs – the boll buggy driver, the module builder, and the tarper. All gone, never to return.

  4. Pete, I'm still learning about all the processing rules. I'm curious about the mobile slaughter… can you do mobile slaughter and then still use a USDA butcher? Every time I think I understand everything… I have a new question!!

  5. Morning Pete. Great video as always. I wanted to ask how often do you put new bedding down? And how often do the pens get cleaned out? Do you ever hose the pens out? I have seen both you and Hilarie shoveling out the pens but never washing them out with water. Is there a reason for this? Oh yes, one more question. I saw in one video that the pigs were eating an old evergreen Christmas tree. What was the reason for that? I am sure you explained it but I forgotten the reason you gave. I LOVED the music you were playing. Thanks so much for sharing all that you and Hilarie do. I hope I am spelling her name correctly. Have a pleasant day.

  6. I'm only 32 and i have the old fart mentality. My husband and i both say we were born in the wrong time period. We bought a small farm (5acres) a couple years ago and slowly getting it going. We have buff orpington chickens and a yorkshire new hampshire cross sow(pearl) and a old spot boar(gimli) like your jonathan. We raise our own meat and garden. The farm across the road from us has a jersey cow that i milk every morning and evening for them in turn for milk. I make our own butter and cheese. I am gonna get me a few dairy goats (nigerian dwarf) soon so we can be even more self sufficient and try to start a small buisness with that. I enjoy watching you and Hillary she has the sweetest smile, very much and love learning new things or maybe doing something that we already do but in a diffrent way. I have been busy canning, i get four 5 gallon buckets full of green beans every few days so I've been in the kitchen non stop seems like and i keep my phone in the window watching all y'alls older videos to keep me company, so thank you for keeping me sane in amongst all these beans lol. Be safe and well and may blessings be upon you ❤🐄🐖🐓🐐

  7. Pete, I can't tell you how many times I've said I should have been born 50 years sooner. Mainly because of music, but also goods & services, etc. Everything you said is my sentiments exactly. 🎵🎶❤️
P.S. By the way, I'm 38 years old and grew up 30 miles west of Cleveland. It's pretty big cow and corn country there, as well. 👍
