We are switching the Desktop Environment from GNOME to KDE and customizing KDE to better suit our needs. .

  1. This is actually pretty cool . I had no idea Linux had so many capabilities. Really tempted to try this out on an old windows 8 laptop i have lying around 🧐

  2. Linux Desktop are scalable server level OS which can be run on user PC hence there's no limitation of what we can achieve. This is totally unlike Windows desktop OS; more so if you use windows home edition.

  3. I second what someone said of you only see black after restarting type in your password and hit enter the login screen was just black for me and afterward I just told kubunto to just skip the login

  4. Really nice video. 🙂 After OS installation I always started to install the GPU driver because it was more important for me than customizing the GUI. Sometimes it was tricky to configure properly my xorg.conf file.
I don't use Linux since 5 years but your videos are so cool so thanks for them. Maybe I will install Linux again at least for a VM.

  5. I installed kubuntu desktop on ubuntu 20 and, both on my work computer and my home computer, catastrophe. The computer did anyting at all extremely slowly. It should have given me an option to boot into Ubuntu but variously didn't and did but then the screen suddenly shifted to KDE after two minutes. Booting into gnome got a black screen.

Online forums there are constant complaints that these two desktops to NOT play well together and installing one on the other messes up your system. I uninstalled every trace of kubuntu and kde and autocleaned and autoremoved and reinstalled ubuntu-desktop in case the system ate gnome or ubuntu dependencies or whatever and then miraculously ubuntu was back. Thank you Jesus.

I do NOT recommend trying this and neither do the Ubuntu forums.

AND do NOT change from gdm3 to sddm or whatever – not needed and on the forums it creates its own 50 million problems.

AND it turned out I could make the changes I most wanted in Ubuntu, get rid of the black bars and even add applications menu by category.

PS Ubuntu runs extremely well as long as you don't screw with it.

  6. Hmm… followed the instructions for installing Kubuntu, now the laptop boots to a turned off monitor. Tried restarting multiple times, looks like the computer is booting but after a few seconds of post the monitor turns off. If I tap the power button the monitor comes back on but to a dark gray screen then turns off.

  7. Thank you for this very much. I have been thinking about installing PopOS with the KDE desktop environment. Linus Tech Tips had recommended PopOS for gaming and I thought about installing it but changing to the KDE desktop because it is a better desktop environment.
