In this video I fix a customers 2017 Chevy 1500 with the big 5.3 that had a code stored in it for “loss of communication with a device on the LIN bus” U1510. Lucky for us there is only one device on the LIN bus in the ECM and that is the active grille shutter. Easy peasy!

  1. Just to clear some stuff up here is the description and operation of the active grille shutter right from GM service data:
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION > ACTIVE GRILLE AIR SHUTTER DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

The active grille air shutter system closes shutters in the front grille to enhance vehicle aerodynamics in driving situations where cooling and A/C loads are relatively low and high levels of front end airflow are not required. If high levels of airflow are required the active grille air shutter system will open one or both shutters. The control signal from the engine control module, ignition and ground circuits enable the active grille air shutter actuators to operate. If the conditions for opening the shutters are reached the engine control module commands the active grille air shutter actuators to open one or both shutters.

The dual active grille air shutter system consists of two aero shutter mechanisms located in the front grille for controlling the amount of air entering the engine compartment. It includes three wires; ground, power and a Local Interconnect Network (LIN) Bus serial data circuit from the engine control module to the shutter actuator. The engine control module determines shutter state based on various vehicle conditions such as vehicle speed, coolant temperature, fan state, refrigerant system pressure, A/C compressor state and ambient temperature. The engine control module has the ability to command each shutter individually to the open or closed positions through communications on the LIN Bus.

The actuators are powered by an ignition circuit that is active when the key is in the RUN position. The vehicle may have to be driven for up to 13 minutes at speeds greater than 41 km/h (25 mph) before a shutter begins to move. If low ambient temperature is detected, the shutters will remain in the closed position.

  2. Stupid engineers with GM. Work with them for 30+ years and they over killed everything and slacked on the important things. No wonder it took so many line operators to put a vehicle together-I was responsible most of my years for ‘direct labor efficiency and reducing manpower’ – ha – they never listened to the people that had to put ‘em together. Rediculous-you’re right with your criticism. ❤ your work and comments.

  3. I just replaced the shutters and brand new ambient temp sensor. My buddy has a Snap on scan tool and when hooked up, he tried opening and closing the shutters but nothing worked. Any idea of what else I could check?

  4. It’s code U1510 the U15 tells you communication error part and the 10 tells you it’s the Grille Shutter. They legit made it idiot proof to diagnose.

  5. Thank you for this video! This just happened on my 2018 Silverado. I know this video is a year old and not sure you'll see this comment but in hopes you do….did you get the new grille shutter directly from GMC/Chevy or was this one purchased from somewhere else? GMC quoted me $480 for the part, but I'm seeing it for more than half of that elsewhere online. Makes me nervous buying from somewhere else other than from a dealer. And usually, that much of a cheaper price means a faulty product. Amazon has one but several reviews state it failed again within months.

  6. Awesome video. Found a tip for ya when I did mine. The middle clips on the grill trim can easily be released from the underside if you another person to lightly pull from the front.

  7. Get you some Loctite HY 4070 universal bonder and fix any unglued part of any car. You can also rebuild plastic parts using this very fast glue.

  8. Just recently (few minutes ago) changed shutter on my 2017 denali. Check engine light was out but came right back on a few minutes later. Not sure what's going on now.

  9. Yeah there is clips underneath you can stick a quarter under each one of the tabs there is 8. It comes right off after your sides are off. I had other friends just take it off and not put another one on. Never had an issue again. You have to wire it to make it see its plugged in. Yes GM is really messing up by taking stuff off parts and also by taking out the dip stick tube for transmission. Wtf
